Meeting electrical insulation challenges with PEEK extrusion
transition in magnet wire production towards electrical insulation through plastic extrusion is gaining momentum. The latest electric motors require higher power and energy density, accommodating up to 1,000V. performance, motor windings are now insulated with advanced plastic materials such as polyether ether ketone (PEEK), which offers enhanced insulating properties and chemical resistance, and can operate at temperatures up to 240°C. Its flexibility, compared to conventional enamelling, allows the creation of tighter bending radii. Combined with reduced insulation thickness, this increases energy density. For the past decade, Frigeco has been developing extrusion lines dedicated to the production of PEEK-coated cables for oil pumps, giving the company extensive experience in processing this material. In recent years, significant advancements have been made in the production of To achieve optimal
MFL Group provides a complete range of machinery for wire and cable manufacturers. The group has gained know-now and experience in the industry in recent years through the acquisition of three companies – CM Caballé, OM Lesmo and Eurodraw Energy – that complement its strengths and add intellectual property into its wire and cable division. In 2022, MFL Group’s machinery offering was expanded through the acquisition of Coseco, which specialises in lines for electrolytic coating of copper wire (tinning, silvering, etc). Frigeco is one of the two brands created within MFL Group. Its origins date back to the late 1990s, and over the last 20 years it has consolidated its position as a brand for rod breakdown lines, intermediate drawing lines, multi-wire drawing lines, rotating machinery, and wire and cable extrusion lines. In response to growing demand for high-performance electric vehicles, the
MFL has gained proficiency in PEEK extrusion
insulated magnet wire, including both PEEK and PPSU (polyphenylsulphone). MFL states that its acquired proficiency demonstrates its expert management of the crystalline phase of the material, achieving minimal insulation thickness and increasing adhesion capacity to the conductor. The company supplies ma chinery that covers the entire spectrum of insulated magnet wire production in PEEK, from the initial rod breakdown ma chine to the final extrusion stage. The company is planning to establish a testing extrusion line for PEEK operation at its facility in Spinetoli, Italy. It is also developing polypropylene insulation for medium voltage cables.
