Rolling, straightening and cutting DEM SpA, based in Italy, is a global pro- vider of technology for shaping ferrous- and non-ferrous metals. Its portfolio includes the full range of machines required to produce reinforcing wire, either cold rolled or cold stretched, with ribbed or smooth surface, packaged in coils or as straight cut-to-length bars, and delivered in bundles or directly inserted into wire mesh machinery. constantly keep all bars aligned after ejection. Multiple intermediate collecting levels are available to safely store bars before falling into the very bottom discharger. The “double sided” bar output bench allows bars to be ejected both left and right upon their selected length, while the tying device provides automatic binding of the bar bundle.

many product changes per shift. This calls for increased flexibility on output capacities; minimisation of set-up time, machine preparation and threading; and high consistency in product characteris tics. The concept relies on a capstan-free line solution and on an automatic roll gap positioning that allows fast set-up. The result of this technical effort is most effective when a DWR line is combined with a mesh welding line. Even in the case of large diameter bars, the DWR is able to directly produce straight bars, with no additional straightening opera tions required. The wire manufacturer can save factory space and can organise production with a just-in-time logic. A new patented quick-locking system for the rolling rings, combined with fast roll positioning, allows a production line changeover and set-up in less than 12 minutes. DEM’s ASC – adaptive straightness control – ensures the straightness of the bars in a completely autonomous control process. DEM SpA www.demgroup.com

For bars up to 16mm diameter, ribbing oc curs by passing the stock through three motorised heads. Despite a lower speed – around 3m/s – the ribbed bars output meets the required quality. This machine is a compromise for when 16mm diam eter output bars need to be processed. The direct wire rolling concept (DWR) is aimed at markets that demand small and diversified production lots that require

The company has a number of technological packages to assist wire makers, with an approach aimed at satisfying all technical demands as well as simpler needs. For reinforcing wire rolling in bars, cold rolling lines with pulling capstans are a solution to make straight bars up to 12mm diameter. This equipment has straightening facilities and a high-speed shear granting a 5m/s speed for bars shorter than 2m (10m/s for longer bars). The top cutting speed is 9,000 cuts per hour while achieving a tolerance of less than 1mm/m on length. A variety of bar output collecting benches are available to fit customer needs. The endless rotation device will
