manufacturer to have more control, but is also supported by economic benefits associated with rod sourcing as well as the elimination of rod premiums. Continuus-Properzi has a complete product portfolio that includes smaller lines for the continuous casting and direct rolling of aluminium and copper rod for the internal consumption of wire and cable producers. The company can supply complete lines, from the furnace set to the coiler(s), as well as fume-treatment systems, if required. The lines are engineered, designed and manufactured in Italy. The company can also supply furnaces to process and refine copper scrap, providing cost savings while promoting sustainability. Continuus-Properzi SpA www.properzi.com

This new strategy does not eliminate dependence on the supply chain, but it shifts the dependence further upstream to more consistent commodities markets. These commodities, which include sow, T-bars and ingots for Al rod production and cathodes for copper rod production, have essentially identical characteristics among the suppliers, regardless of the producer – something that is not necessarily true for wire rod producers. The wire and cable manufacturer uses these commodities to produce wire rod, enabling them to control the quality and consistency of the wire rod they produce while targeting the specific mechanical and electrical rod properties that are of most importance to their specific wire and cable products. This vertical integration is not only a strategic investment that allows the

The Covid-19 pandemic exposed the instability of the global supply chain in many aspects of industry, including wire and cable. The supply of quality rod, both alumin ium and copper, has become tighter in North America due to increased demand and diminished installed capacity. This has led wire and cable producers to look at their historic view on rod supply and to consider a strategic invest- ment for vertical integration into the production of aluminium and/or copper rod. As a result, Continuus-Properzi has had many requests for quotes from cable manufacturers looking for smaller copper and aluminium rod mills, to allow them to produce rod in-house to meet their production requirements.

As good as new again – or even better. NIEHOFF modernization.

During the design and manufacturing of its equipment, NIEHOFF focuses on advanced technology, quality, reliability, robustness and durability. That is the reason why NIEHOFF machines that have been in operation for decades are also worth a modernization performed by NIEHOFF specialists. These professionals have access to well-maintained and original documentation, and thus to all pertinent data. Because of their experience and expertise, NIEHOFF specialists can handle all customer-specific particularities. This applies practically to all NIEHOFF machines including any modifications made to them by customers. The spare parts needed for reconditioning are produced in house on cutting-edge machining centers to OEM quality, and thus meet the same high requirements as parts for new machines. Our technicians inspect the machine or line in question on site and analyze the specific increase in efficiency, which can be achieved by a modernization . The measures will then be done at either the customer’s site, on the shop floor at NIEHOFF facility or at a NIEHOFF subsidiary with its own manufacturing. After completion of the modernization measures, the machines or lines are not only “in mint condition”, but often show higher productivity than before. In most cases, modernizing NIEHOFF machines even after decades of use is therefore worthwhile. Allow us the opportunity to evaluate your modernization needs.

Tenova to revamp EAF for ORI Martin ORI Martin, an integrated steel group that produces steel for the automotive, fastener, mechanical and building

The Consteerrer technology, developed in partnership with ABB, is claimed to offer low operating costs, reliable and safe operation and superior quality steel. The Consteerrer enhances the Consteel Evolution process with ABB’s ArcSave® non-contact electromagnetic stirring of the furnace’s liquid bath, and can be customised to match the needs of different EAF process steps. Natale Gaudenzi, ORI Martin plant manager, commented, “Sustainability has always been a core value at ORI Martin, as we have pursued strategies to protect the environment and facilitate a circular economy. As early as 1998, we were investing in technologies to mitigate our impact on the environment, which is how we came to Tenova, who has been a trusted and reliable partner throughout.” Start-up of the new furnace is scheduled for June 2024. Tenova SpA www.tenova.com ORI Martin SpA www.orimartin.com

In 2019, Tenova again partnered with ORI Martin on the Lighthouse Plant “Acciaio_4.0”, a project supported by the Italian Smart Factory Cluster, which created a “cyber physical factory” by integrating Industry 4.0 technologies in the steelmaking process. With the new contract, ORI Martin will complete the revamping of its plant, optimising consumption and the process for the safe production of steel with minimal environmental impact. The Brescia plant will also be ready for the installation of an electro-magnetic stirrer with Tenova’s Consteerrer® process.

sectors, has awarded Tenova a contract to replace the electric arc furnace (EAF) at its mill in Brescia, Italy. The revamping of the EAF highlights ORI Martin’s commitment to the sustainable steel sector. The contract continues the decades-long partnership between the two companies, which began in 1998 when ORI Martin commissioned Tenova’s Consteel® EAF – the first Consteel in Europe at the time. In 2015, after more than 15 years of production, Tenova was contracted to modernise the Consteel unit, and to install a heat recovery system on the primary off-gas line exiting the Consteel to recover the available thermal energy for the production of steam. The iRecovery® system continues to deliver thermal energy to Brescia’s district heating grid during winter, as well as feeding an ORC turbo-generator to produce electric energy for ORI Martin’s internal use.

Engineering Supply Chain Show 2024 The skills, capabilities and workmanship in the UK’s engineering and manufacturing supply chains are being given a new showcase: the Engineering Supply Chain Show (ESC) has been launched with aim of boosting trade opportunities for this national manufacturing asset.

engineering companies to generate business leads from new customers. With more and more reshoring taking place, the ESC show is the destination for the UK manufacturing community seeking to shorten their supply chain by sourcing more domestic content.” Manufacturing Technologies Association

The ESC Show, where engineering and manufacturing buyers will find suppliers exclusively in the UK engineering and manufacturing supply chain, is being co-located in a dedicated hall alongside MACH 2024, the UK’s national show for engineering-based manufacturing, which takes place at the NEC in Birmingham between 15 and 19 April 2024. The three day ESC Show will take place from 16 to 18 April. The event is promoted by the Engineering Industries Association (EIA), a cluster member of the Manufacturing Technologies Association (MTA). The EIA is dedicated to raising the profile of the supply chain to boost opportunities for the companies that operate within it. The ESC show will be the only co-located exhibition alongside MACH 2024, and will have direct access to its 26,000 attendees, with one visitor badge providing access to both events. James Selka DL, CEO at the MTA, said, “Since bringing the EIA on board as part of the MTA family in 2021, we have continued to shine a spotlight on the UK engineering supply chain, hosting a well-received show-within-a-show at MACH 2022. Now in a dedicated hall alongside MACH 2024, ESC 2024 is the ideal place for world-class subcontractors and supply chain

the previous MBO in 2013. Working our way up in the business, we have seen first-hand what the employee ownership scheme has meant and the sense of commitment and pride it brings. “It was a natural decision to use our own MBO to include the new members of staff and get all 33 employees on the same scheme.” Mr Mander added, “There’s a real togetherness across the business, with employees also enjoying a renewed profit share, dividends and [health insurance] membership. Customers even comment about the family atmosphere when they visit.” Alloy Wire International manufactures round, flat and profile wire in more than 60 exotic alloys, such as Inconel, Monel, Hastelloy, Nimonic and Waspaloy. Founded in 1946 by John Stockdale in an old ambulance station, the firm now operates across 15 different market sectors and, despite global supply chain disruption, is still delivering material in four weeks from the order being placed. Alloy Wire International www.alloywire.com technologies and for spring making technology, including end products such as screws, grooves, eyelets and technical springs. Heavy, space-consuming mesh welding machines will be located in the central hall 17. Tube 2024 will occupy halls 1 to 7a. As well as themes such as machinery and equipment for wire, cable and tube production, processing and end products, wire and Tube place a strong focus on topics that include stainless steel, hydrogen, plastic tubes, cutting and slitting technologies and e-mobility. In addition, fastening and joining technologies, spring manufacturing tech- nology and glass fibre technologies are gaining interest. The main industries involved are the chemical, oil and gas sectors, the automotive industry, the construction sector and the entire telecommunications sector. wire 2024 will occupy exhibition halls 9 to 17. Wire, cable, wire products and technologies are scheduled in halls 9 to 12 and hall 15; China’s expertise will be found in hall 14; and hall 16 will be a special venue for fastening and fixing

With more than 2,000 exhibitors from 65 countries, wire and Tube 2024 will once again assert their position as leading international trade fairs for the key industries of wire, cable, tubes, pipes and their supplier industries. Over 100,000 square metres of the Düsseldorf Fairgrounds will be occupied, as trade visitors from all over the world are expected. Exhibitors come mainly from the strong European production countries, the USA, Central and South America, Asia and Africa. “The Düsseldorf trade fair venue is the absolute front-place for the wire and tube sectors when it comes to presenting innovations from the relevant industries to a broad, international audience,” commented Daniel Ryfisch, director of wire/Tube and flow technologies at show organiser Messe Düsseldorf.

AWI extends employee ownership scheme All staff at a UK manufacturer of round, flat and profile wire are now shareholders, following a recently completed management buy-out (MBO). This has been a long-term commitment that first started in 1999, when Bill Graham fulfilled a 23-year vision of putting staff at the heart of the business by giving them share ownership and the same opportunity to benefit from its growth.

Alloy Wire International (AWI), which has two sites in the West Midlands and Yorkshire, was purchased by directors Tom Mander, Andrew Du Plessis and Adam Shaw in January, with the new management team immediately ex- tending the firm’s employee ownership scheme to include all 33 employees.

Managing director Tom Mander com- mented, “Bill’s decision at the start of the millennium gave us a distinctive edge to our business and this was something Mark Venables took on when he led

With the arrival of digitalisation, big data and Industry 4.0, adopting smart-factory processes via sophisticated software can enable manufacturers to address some of the opportunities and threats, such as: • Developing robust and accessible training programmes that equip workers with the skills needed for Industry 4.0 roles can help bridge the skills gap • Upskilling and reskilling – encouraging workers to adapt to the changing job landscape can help them transition into new roles • Embracing a diverse workforce can help access a wider talent pool and different perspectives • Encouraging a culture of lifelong learning can help workers stay relevant and adaptable in a rapidly evolving job market • Human-machine collaboration: Industry 4.0 is not just about replacing human workers with machines; it is also about enhancing human-machine collaboration to create more efficient and innovative processes By addressing these challenges and implementing strategies to mitigate labour shortages, manufacturers can leverage the potential of Industry 4.0 while ensuring a skilled and capable workforce. Monitoring of market trends, proactive workforce planning and adaptability to changing circumstances can help manufacturers to address labour shortage challenges. Cimteq by UL Solutions www.cimteq.com

Wire and cable manufacturing often requires specialised skills and knowledge. As technology advances and manufacturing processes become more complex, there may be a need for more skilled workers with the necessary expertise to operate and maintain the machinery and equipment involved in the production process. This shortage can lead to a gap between the demand for skilled labour and the available workforce. In addition, as the current workforce ages there may be a need for more young workers to fill the vacant positions. This demographic shift can be worsened by a lack of interest among younger generations in pursuing careers in manufacturing.
