Advancing sustainable development In a business environment characterised by a mix of risk and opportunity, informed consumers and investors want businesses to take responsibility in environmental issues. With the United Nations calling on all companies to play an increasing role in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, operational practices are one element of the positive impact that can be made.

cycle time and power consumption. Producing more parts with existing capacity may even provide machine shops with the opportunity to avoid additional capital investment. The Force software module within Vericut uses physics-based optimisation to determine the maximum reliable feed rate for any given cutting condition based on four factors: force on the cutter, spindle power, maximum chip thickness and maximum allowable feed rate. It calculates ideal feed rates by analysing tool geometry and parameters, material properties of the stock and cutting tool, detailed cutting tool edge geometry, and Vericut cut-by-cut contact conditions. CGTech’s Vericut software can help to minimise or prevent various types of waste within a manufacturing business, with an underlying aim to reduce, re-use and recycle. Since its launch in 1988, Vericut has been targeting waste via simulation, verification and optimisation of CNC machines. Production simulation of the NC data, the ‘real’ machine code, offers companies security for their machining processes, simulating the real processing situation with a virtual machine. Vericut can be applied at different points during the manufactur ing process to help control waste, starting with the ‘prove out’ of a new or modified component, with Vericut producing any parts required in a virtual environment. This often removes the need to physically test run a part prior to production, which prevents wasting raw material to generate an erroneous part, along with the chance that the NC program might contain errors that could cause the machine tool to crash and become damaged. The software can also be applied to mature components already in production, where it can optimise the NC code to produce a more efficient program, with associated savings inmanufacturing

Software simplifies cable transit safety

In order to meet new requirements from IACS – the International Association of Classification Societies – owners of ships and offshore units must maintain a complete cable transit seal systems register. A digital tool from Roxtec enables full compliance with the new regulations. RoxtecTransitOperatesoftware isanew tailor-made system for chief and safety officers and operational managers responsible for the safety and lifecycle management of assets. Users can keep track of all cable transits, from initial installations to recent upgrades, and

share transit status with others. The software enables seamless and efficient collaboration between owners and contractors, as well as with inspectors from classification societies. The new IACS requirements focus on systemised control, documentation and inspection of watertight cable transits. They state that shipbuilders should establish a cable transit seal systems register and that owners and operators should update the register and make sure it is complete, correct and available for surveyors. “Owners and operators can use Roxtec Transit Operate tomanage all transits online,” said Mats Åhman, head of digital solutions at Roxtec. “They can secure long-term quality assurance of their assets while reducing paperwork.” The requirements apply to ships and offshore units contracted for construction on or after 1 July 2021, but Mr Åhman recommends that owners and operators also work digitally for existing assets: “It is a way of streamlining the workflow. It is crucial to secure installation quality during both the construction process and the operational phase in order to extend the lifetime of your asset.” Anyone interested in the features and benefits of Roxtec Transit Operate can watch a 19-minute webinar that presents the new digital tool at www.roxtec.com/en/to/roxtec-transit-operate launch Roxtec International AB www.roxtec.com
