Focus moves to Asia Hot on the heels of the successful and much anticipated wire exhibition in Düsseldorf, Germany, the focus firmly moves to the Asian market with the staging of wire China in September and wire Southeast Asia in October. The wire and cable industries – described as the“blood vessels”and“nerve” in an ever-expanding Chinese market – have seen massive growth in the region over the last 20 years. Investment and expansion have been consistently high and have seen wire and cable manufacturers grow in direct relation to those investments. Similarly, Bangkok in Thailand provides a bustling backdrop to the staging of wire Southeast Asia. Long recognised as one of the main authoritative exhibitions in the region, BITEC in Thailand’s capital city will welcome visitors from far and wide during October as the region again comes into the spotlight. You can catch up with some of the exhibitors with editorials spread throughout this issue of EuroWire . Also taking its share of the spotlight in this issue is the IWCS Cable and Connectivity Forum, being staged in Providence, Rhode Island, USA, from 10 to 13 October. Split between a table-top exhibition and conference, IWCS technical papers provide an insight into the future workings of cable and wire. And a good example of worldwide activity can be found on page 10 with Spanish company Delta Tecnic highlighting a 12 per cent growth in revenue last year, as well as more than 20 per cent increase in turnover in the first four months of 2022. The company has made strong inroads into the Asian market – specifically India – and since opening a new masterbatch plant in Mexico in 2020, has targeted the Americas market with this investment.

Twin resistance spot welding cell at William Hughes’s facility in Dorset, UK

Welded to success with robot welding cells

ready to be measured in William Hughes’s quality department. After two years of manufacturing in Bulgaria, the company landed its first welded assembly for the UK market. By this time, investment in machinery and personnel had led to William Hughes producing its own tooling, allowing more control over design philosophy and greater cost effectiveness. These early projects have now all gone to end of production, but William Hughes’s growth in this area has led to it having a total of 23 MAG robot welding cells and ten spot robot welding cells in its three manufacturing locations.

The William Hughes engineering depart- ment was tasked with understanding the specific tooling required to manufacture this type of product and the investment necessary to bring such tooling manu- facture in-house. After several years of honing knowledge and developing expertise, the team in Bulgaria secured two major contracts. Rear seat welded assemblies typically have approximately 50-60 welds, but for one of the newly secured projects, each frame had a total of 120 welds. Using a mixture of in-house design with support from sub-contract toolmakers, the first William Hughes welding tools were produced. Shortly afterwards, the first tool components appeared and were

William Hughes’s expertise in MIG, MAG, TIG, spot/resistance and butt welding processes has led to it establishing a total of 33 welding cells across its three factories in the UK, Poland and Bulgaria. The company has always been a large volume producer of wires, springs and small welded assemblies for the automotive industry. Twenty years ago, welding was carried out manually or by simple semi-automated machines. However, engineering director Emma Burgon focusedon acquiring a contract for 100 per cent rear seat welded assemblies, having recognised a potential gap in the market at the company’s low-cost facility in Bulgaria.

Successful wire Düsseldorf for Sikora Despite a slight decrease in visitor numbers compared to 2018, Sikora has hailed wire 2022 a great success. “Many customers visited our booth to experience our devices and technologies live,” said Dr Jörg Wissdorf, member of the board at Sikora, who went on to emphasise the importance of personal exchanges, which have been maintained but not replaced by virtual encounters in recent years. “We were able to welcome trade visitors such as customers and partners of the industry at our booth with whom we discussed, negotiated and even concluded concrete projects.” The visitors came mainly from Europe – mostly Germany, followed by Turkey, Italy, France and Poland. “We were also able to inspire some customers from South America and Korea with our equipment for quality control during extrusion,”explained Dr Wissdorf. In addition to the data cable industry, the automotive, installa tion, optical fibre and power cable sectors were strongly repre sented. Interest in the Purity Scanner Advanced inspection and sorting system showed the importance and potential of in-line purity testing of pellets in the cable industry. Also generating attention were technologies for quality control during extrusion that can lead to material savings. “Intelligent systems for continuous measurement and control of product

parameters help to optimise the extrusion process, enabling manufacturers to produce more efficiently and further reduce the CO 2 footprint,” said Dr Wissdorf. On approximately 190m 2 and two floors, Sikora’s stand presented the company’s future-oriented technologies along with videos that summarised the benefits of the systems in anunderstandable way. The second floor was used as a lounge, where customers could have individual conversations with Sikora experts while enjoying food and drink prepared by a gourmet chef. Sikora AG www.sikora.net

MacBee under new Fenn ownership Fenn, LLC has acquired the intellectual property of Engineered Machinery Group Inc, which includes the rights to MacBee Engineering Group, and will continue to build and support its product lines. but the MacBee product line continued, after being licensed to Mr Stevens’s son, who operated his own firm under the Mac Bee name, until the pandemic forced its closure.

With a similar focus in clientele, industries and equipment, Fenn was found to be a natural fit. “MacBee’s wire- and tube focused product lines are an excellent complement to our existing draw bench, swager and wire shaping offerings,” said Fenn president Ryan Cutter. “We look forward to utilising Fenn’s existing infrastructure to continue providing MacBee equipment, service and spare parts for MacBee customers.” Mr Stevens will join Fenn as a consultant, to continue supporting MacBee products. Fenn LLC www.fenn-torin.com

Mr Stevens continued to maintain ownership of all MacBee designs and intellectual property, supporting the product line with his newly formed firm, John Stevens Consulting. However, he was eager to find a permanent new home for the MacBee rights that would allow customers to not only purchase new machinery, but also enjoy a greater depth and breadth of service and spare parts availability.

Founded in 1966, MacBee Engineering was known as an American manufacturer of sink and drawmachines, draw benches, payoffs, take-ups and a variety of ancillary equipment. In 2004, former MacBee vice president John Stevens purchased the company, adding its product lines to his own company, Engineered Machinery Group. Madem Group Madem Group, with headquarters in Brazil, manufactures nailed wooden reels. The company has its own renewable forests, sawmill and manufacturing facilities in Brazil, the USA, Bahrain, Colombia, Mexico and Spain, and employs more than 700 associates worldwide. Interest in greener welding options at wire 2022

“We registered a lot of interest from manufacturers looking for greener welding solutions, who were impressed by the performance of our energy efficient pneumatic and electro-hydraulic cold welding machines. “Contacts were generally positive about the industry despite the current economic situation and we secured a number of interesting orders.”

PWM Ltd, a British manufacturer of cold welding machines and dies, presented its range of products at wire 2022. Commenting on the show, PWM manag ing director Steve Mepsted said, “Visitor traffic did appear down compared with previous years but visitor quality was sound, and it was good to have oppor tunities to meet existing and potential customers and suppliers face to face.

Reunited for wire South America Setic, Pourtier and C2S will be partici pating at the 2022 edition of wire South America in São Paulo, Brazil, sharing a stand with Reichenbach.

C2S is a strategically tailored division with locations worldwide, providing in-depth knowledge and support to assist the wire and cable industry with maintaining, repairing and upgrading existing machines of any brand. Bow Technology provides the wire and cable industry with energy-efficient bows for all brands of double twist machine, including the new generation multi-use GreenBow2+.

The resumption of the partnership between Setic/Pourtier and Reichenbach was established during this year’s wire Düsseldorf show where, after a hiatus of four years, the companies were reunited. The contract was signed during the event in June, with the presence of Curt Reichenbach and Thierry Collard. Reichenbach regains the status of exclusive representative for Setic/Pourtier, their service department C2S, and Bow Technology, being responsible for the sale of equipment, parts and technical assistance throughout Brazil. H Folke Sandelin AB Lead extrusion and cable stripping equipment specialist H Folke Sandelin AB (HFSAB) from Motala, Sweden, will be co exhibiting at bothwire Southeast Asia and wire China with Niehoff Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co KG of Germany. HFSAB personnel will be available at both events to discuss the latest addition to the range, the high-output Type 5 lead extruder, with new technology for the main motor and gearbox and a new ergonomic look.

operation for weeks with little or no variation in temperatures, wall thickness or concentricity. The lead wall thickness can be kept to a minimum with corresponding savings in lead. Energy efficient melting pots are available for 10-, 18-, 35- and 60-tonne capacities. HFSAB also produces cable-stripping machines – the CRRS and Model SM-H – both of which can remove individual layers without causing damage to the layer below, enabling the outer jacket, lead sheath or triple layer XLPE to be re applied and the cable repaired. The CRRS is used for the removal of outer sheathing materials such as HDPE with or without a bonded thin aluminium metallic sheath, PE, PVC or lead. H Folke Sandelin AB www.hfsab.com

The company will also introduce new semi-automatic die centring technology and lead extrusion controls for saving lead during the extrusion process. Company staff will be available to discuss why lead should be used instead of aluminium in wet applications. For more than 60 years, the lead extruder from HFSAB has been designed, manufactured and assembled only in Sweden, using the latest manufacturing techniques, to ensure that lead-sheathed cables are produced trouble-free and with a perfect moisture barrier. The HFSAB horizontal lead extruder is easy to install and maintain, requiring no special foundations. It is reliable and fully automatic, with a control system that enables continuous
