Bridging the cable industry’s skills gap

industrial strategy has at its core a number of policies to help manufacturing ‘build a Britain fit for the future’. At the same time, the Industry 4.0 revolution has led to an evolution of employment in manufacturing. The Industry 4.0 workforce will increasingly focus on managing new operations, as well as managing, programming and maintaining robotics. The automation offered by Cimteq’s CableBuilder cable design software means fewer repetitive, tedious tasks for design engineers and more tasks that require greater levels of judgement. These highly skilled professionals can then get back to designing cutting-edge cable and wire. Similarly, CableMES’s manufacturing execution dashboards and reporting demand greater levels of judgement from operators. Cimteq Ltd – UK Website : www.cimteq.com

IN 1982, the total number of jobs in UK manufacturing was nearly a quarter of the working population. Fast forward to 2002 and this figure dropped to 12 per cent. Recent statistics show that the figure has now dropped to eight per cent. This is not unique to the UK – all industrialised countries, with the exception of Brazil, have seen manufacturing jobs decline since the 1990s. Over the last 20 years in particular, factories have automated many tasks on the production line, which have to some extent replaced jobs. Compared to the 1980s, there are three million fewer jobs in manufacturing in the UK. Government focus turned to industries which were seeing an increase in the value of GDP output. As a result, funding for and interest in STEM education dropped. This perfect storm led to only one outcome – the creation of a workforce with a stronger interest in other sectors. In recent years, there has been a renewed recognition of the importance of STEM to the national economy. The government’s

Expanding its global presence

IT is a case of ‘to Russia with love’ for UK manufacturer BAR Products and Services. The company has enhanced its global presence by providing the latest wire strand roller compaction unit to its first client in Russia. The contract was signed earlier this year then supplied and commissioned within weeks of agreement. The compaction unit is now fully operational, and Bar Products is confident that there will be further units and tooling supplied to its new customer. The wire strand roller compaction units are used in many of the world’s major wire strand and rope manufacturers, with repeat orders being a measure of the success of the machine. Bar Products & Services Ltd began supplying drawing dies over 25 years ago, and now manufactures tooling, wear parts and precision engineered products to the wire, tube, cable and rope industries around the world, from Europe to China, from India to Mexico, USA to Malaysia, and now into Russia.

40 years and counting…

FORT Wayne Wire Die is celebrating 40 years of sales in the European market. Due to an increased interest in its products, on 1 st April 1979 Fort Wayne, a producer of diamond wire drawing dies and tooling, opened its sales office in Europe, near Frankfurt airport, Germany. A German wholly owned subsidiary was established with the name Fortek GmbH. Initially, the office focused on Western Europe only and consisted of one salesman and one person in customer service. The company provided localised service to European customers – taking care of import procedures which were more complicated at the time, clearing the goods into the common market, and trans-shipping to the end customer. It would also invoice in the local currency, and provide localised inventory and general sales and support for the market. The strategy was successful and Fortek is now a major wire-drawing supplier within the European market.

The company has also found a number of good sales agents in important markets such as Poland, Turkey, the UK, Egypt, Serbia, Italy, Greece, Russia and Romania.

The territory has also been expanded to include the Middle East and North Africa. The team has grown to four seasoned professionals, between them speaking seven different languages, helping to communicate effectively with a range of customers.

A highly experienced manager, Mr Groß is responsible for the worldwide sale of Sikora’s inspection, sorting and analysis systems for plastic pellets. “We are happy to win an outstanding sales expert with Hilger Groß, who perfectly knows the plastics market,” said Holger Lieder, sales director. “With his long-standing experience in compounding and inspection of plastic material, he will distribute the benefits of our systems to the industry and further develop the plastics area.” Over the past years, Mr Groß has worked in managing positions in sales and as QM auditor. His focus was on quality, process optimisation and efficiency enhancement for the production and processing CONVERT Ltd, a UK manufacturer of cable looms and harnesses, has designed a rear light cable harness for a German automotive manufacturer’s new all-electric sports car. The Kent-based electrical engineering company recently completed pre-series development work on the cable harness for the LED lamp unit designed and manufactured by Wipac – a Buckingham-based design and manufacturing company specialising in high-tech exterior LED lights for the prestige automotive market. The next three years could see Convert manufacturing more than 60,000 rear light cable harness for the new model. This would involve making two million crimp connections a year containing cable equivalent to the length of 2,500 football pitches. Dave Lord, managing director, said: “We’re excited to have completed the pre-series development work. We‘ve invested in a new Artos CR11 automatic crimping wire processor especially to support this project. Howmanufacturers of wire harnesses can be the big winners in CASE trends

They will only be able to meet these requirements through an increasing focus on digitisation. Only then will the manufacturers be able to supply the OEMs with the necessary data and be able to continually monitor and optimise the quality of their products by capturing and evaluating the production data. However, the further automation of the manufacturing processes is essential for this digitisation. Without it, reliable data collection and processing would not be possible. In turn, design for manufacturing forms the fundamental basis for automation. In the long term, the wire harnesses must be designed so that they can be manufactured using automation in the first place. “Digitisation, automation and design for manufacturing are the core competencies of the future for manufacturers of wire harnesses,” added Mr Jost. DiIT – Germany Website : www.diit.de

“Wire harnesses are turning from a purely price-driven commodity product into a safety-critical, quality-driven strategic purchased part,” said Bernd Jost, managing director of DiIT GmbH – a specialist for integrated software systems used in wiring harness production. For the manufacturers of wire harnesses, this means a paradigm shift with enormous potential. They now have a chance to benefit from these global developments through new business opportunities. However, these opportunities will not simply present themselves. “With the current, largely manual manufacturing processes and the many inconsistencies between the systems seen in production control, manufacturers of wire harnesses will no longer be able to cope with future challenges,” said Mr Jost. “Due to the strategic importance of the wire harnesses the manufacturers will be faced with very different requirements from OEMs in terms of traceability and quality.”

REVOLUTIONARY the automotive branch are threatening the livelihood of many in the supply segment. However, according to DiIT, manufacturers of wire harnesses can be the big winners – provided they do their homework. Shared and Services, Electrified – or CASE, for short: these four trends are disrupting in the automotive branch and could fundamentally change it forever. As a result, many traditional players in the supply industry are now in difficulty. The long-term existence of manufacturers of mechanical parts such as components for petrol motors or assemblies is even under threat. This is not the case for manufacturers of wire harnesses. Their products will play a key role in electrified, driverless, networked cars that support comprehensive mobility services through digital services. They are used for running all energy, signal and communication flows that make the new functions possible in the first place. changes in Connected, Autonomous,

Celebration time for Harting

TWENTY five years ago, the Harting Technology Group opened a subsidiary in Prague, Czech Republic, that has since enjoyed a successful development. This was a point that chairman Philip Harting emphasised during a gala evening celebrated with customers, employees and representatives of the German-Czech Board of Trade in Palais Martinic: “The decision to locate in the Czech Republic was a thoroughly worthwhile step.” “It quickly became clear to us, after the political changes and upheavals, that this region was a promising market for the future. It was therefore the obvious decision to strengthen our activities in Eastern Europe and, in the course of our internationalisation, which began in 1979, to gain a foothold here as well,” added Mr Harting. Since then, the country has flourished, so that in the following years the neighbouring countries were also considered for expansion. “Within a few years, starting in 2003, our subsidiaries in Romania, Poland and Hungary were launched – including our recently

One of the first stockists to be BASEC registered

It is a safety net for those sourcing cable products and ensures the quality is maintained throughout the supply chain. Mr Vegad added: “To become registered involves an extremely rigorous audit above the ISO 9001: 2015 standard we already have in place. Maintaining our first-class standard of quality is incredibly important.” Cableworld Limited is an independent stockist and worldwide distributor of a wide range of electrical cables and accessories to relevant international standards. Cableworld Ltd – UK Website : www.cable-world.co.uk Results in line with expectations Financial results in line with lower sales figures of the previous two years were approved at a meeting of Continuus-Properzi’s board during May this year. The results are not overly surprising as it is a technology-driven machinery manufacturer with delivery times around 12 months in the future. However, the board expressed its satisfaction with the success of the new commercial direction and sales organisation that tripled the backlog of purchase orders, and broadened the niche markets in the non-ferrous fields where the company is offering new advanced systems and machinery.

A UK-based company is celebrating after becoming one of the first cable distributors in the world to be accredited under a new scheme to raise quality in the industry. Cableworld Limited has been awarded Registered Stockist certification status from the prestigious British Approvals Service for Cables, recognised in the industry as BASEC. It means that customers of the company can be certain that all their products are of the highest quality and safety. Business development and quality manager Hinesh Vegad and his team are delighted that their hard work to meet the stringent assessment criteria required has paid off. “This is fantastic news for us – it is a huge achievement for a company of our size. Achieving this status demonstrates our commitment to quality,” he said.

The new industry certification scheme has been designed by BASEC to raise quality standards throughout the supply chain.

It looks at the practices and processes involved with procuring, handling and storing cable products, to ensure they are up to standard. Cable samples are taken for testing to verify that they meet the standards they are claimed to. Most importantly, it enables enhanced market surveillance of the product before it enters the market.
