During breaks in production, printers can become clogged as ink dries on the printhead, leading to lengthy cleaning cycles prior to resuming production. The IQPrint technology used in IQJET eliminates this, combining automatic nozzle-sealing technology with a new smart ink management system. By automatically sealing the ink circuit, IQJET uses less ink. It also condenses evaporated solvent and feeds it back

Investment in capacity expansion Owing to increased demand from newly developed markets, the Dorstener Drahtwerke Group is investing heavily in the USA and in its headquarters in the German Ruhr region.

intentions behind the extensive investments, which are due to be completed in 2024, managing director Volker Tüshaus said, “We are certain that, following the reorganisation of wire production at the two sites, we will not only be able to respond more flexibly and efficiently to customer requirements, but will also be more robust in the event of regional fluctuations in demand. The more favourable business and investment climate also speaks in favour of the US market.”

For decades, almost 70 per cent of production capacity at the Dorstener Drahtwerke site was destined for the graphic arts industry, but digitalisation and the associated changes in reading habits have caused this volume to shrink significantly in recent years. It has been replaced by various new applications that are more future proof, such as the production of high-carbon brush wires, (dental) medical wires or technical wires for use in hydrogen electrolysis. The Dorstener Drahtwerke Group has been progressing with the modernisation of the Dorsten site since 2022, in order to prepare for continued growth in demand for products with a high degree of specialisation in terms of materials, mechanical properties and surface quality. In 2023, the go-ahead was given for the expansion of the US plant in York, Pennsylvania. In addition to the purchase of a bell annealer, including a hydrogen option, investments will be made in York in machinery for coating with copper, nickel, zinc and tin. Wet and dry drawing capacities have also been, and are currently being, expanded. With these measures, the family-owned company believes it is well positioned for the long term. Orion maintains gold sustainability rating

There are only a handful of permanent ocean-floor sensors in place globally, since installing and maintaining them is challenging and prohibitively expensive. By applying NPL’s technique to existing seafloor cables, thousands of sensors could be implemented. The sensing technique does not require any new hardware or infrastructure to be installed, instead using the optical fibre itself as the environmental sensor. The technique has the potential to provide a valuable early warning system to safeguard coastal populations in the event of a tsunami. It also offers a solution to fill the gap in data in ocean monitoring, with an impact in several scientific areas, including seismology and oceanography. Future projects could develop the concept into a worldwide monitoring network, giving earlier and more accurate detection of earthquakes and tsunamis, as well as advancing the understanding of ocean floor geology and climate change through the long term monitoring of seafloor temperature changes. National Physical Laboratory www.npl.co.uk Measurement Standards Laboratory of New Zealand www.measurement.govt.nz more sustainable company,” said Orion CEO Corning Painter. Over the last year, Orion has achieved several sustainability milestones, including the completion of a series of projects (with a total cost of more than $300mn) that involved installing technology that substantially reduces emissions at the company’s US plants. Orion recently received €6.4mn in fund ing from the German government and the European Union to further develop technology to improve the production of carbon black using circular feedstocks. Scientists from the UK’s National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and the Measurement Standards Laboratory (MSL) in New Zealand are to carry out the first optical interferometry-based earthquake sens- ing tests in the Pacific Ocean. By performing ultra-sensitive optical measurements, scientists from the two laboratories will “convert” a seafloor cable extending offshore from New Zealand into an array of sensors for earthquakes and ocean currents. These tests will lay the foundation for investigating the potential use of existing seafloor cables as detectors for tsunami early warning systems. The technique was first used by NPL in 2021, and derived from methods used for quantum science. Existing optical fibre infrastructure is used to gather continuous, real-time environmental data from the seabed. NPL previously demonstrated the technique in the Atlantic Ocean on a 5,860km-long intercontinental submarine optical fibre link between the UK and Canada. The Pacific Ocean is a highly seismically active area, providing an ideal test bed for advancing the technology and demonstrating its full potential. NPL and the MSL will test the technique later this year on a section of the 3,876km-long Southern Cross NEXT cable on the floor of the Tasman Sea between New Zealand and Australia. Speciality chemicals company Orion SA has maintained a Gold medal rating from EcoVadis, and ranks among the top two per cent of the companies assessed by the organisation in a wide range of sustainability areas. Orion improved its score from the previous year by making gains in the areas of sustainable procurement and ethics, according to EcoVadis, a provider of business sustainability ratings. “The annual progress Orion is making in the EcoVadis assessments is just another example of how committed we are to being a trusted partner for all our stakeholders and becoming an even

Tenova, a developer and provider of sus tainable solutions for the green transition of the metals industry, has received an order from Hasçelik Sanayi ve Ticaret AS to install and commission equipment in a new plant in Osmaneli, Bilecik, Turkey. Hasçelik is a manufacturer of special steel with a total of five manufacturing plants and other locations worldwide. The new line will comprise a Consteel® electric arc furnace (EAF) equipped with Consteerrer® electro-magnetic liquid steel stirring system, a ladle furnace and a twin vacuum degasser. All units are linked by an automation system to optimise the whole process and ensure the quality of the steel grades. The unit selected by Hasçelik will be the first continuously charged EAF in Turkey, and will allow the steelmaker to use the flexibility of the Consteel EAF to tackle declining scrap availability and quality. The continuous charge makes the process robust to the variation of the scrap density, quality and content of volatile compounds. At the centre of the system is the new Consteel Evolution, based on a full platform EAF with single-point roof lifting system. This combination is claimed to provide the benefits of energy efficiency, reduced workforce, increased reliability, improved productivity and reduced environmental impact. Within Consteel, the fumes from the EAF are used to pre-heat raw materials inside the pre-heating section, while the scrap is delivered to the crucible with a steady, controlled flow. With the continuity of the charge, the organic compounds develop ing from the non-metallic portion of the scrap get thoroughly pyrolysed and com busted within the system, ensuring the minimum possible generation of noxious substances such as dioxins and furans. The system also reduces noise and pro vides a safer and healthier working envi ronment while eliminating the need for personnel operating in hazardous areas. Special steel manufacturer Hasçelik has ordered a Consteel EAF with Consteerrer

Permission granted for electric arc furnace in Scunthorpe

forward in our journey to net zero and we thank everyone who has supported our plans. “The proposed installation of EAFs in Scunthorpe and Teesside is central to our journey to a green future as they would help us reduce emissions of CO 2 by more than 75 per cent. However, it is crucial we now secure the backing of the UK government.” Significant preparation works, including environmental and technical studies and equipment selection, are underway to ensure the company’s ambitious proposals can be delivered at the earliest

opportunity while discussions with the UK government continue. Both proposed EAFs would replace the ageing iron and steelmaking operations at British Steel’s Scunthorpe site, which are responsible for the majority of its CO 2 emissions. The company proposes maintaining current operations until it transitions to electric arc steelmaking. It has started preliminary talks with trade unions about electrification, and has promised to support employees affected by its decarbonisation plans. High-capacity hot strip mill commissioned By rolling the first hot strip, SMS has put into operation the new high-capacity hot strip mill (HSM) at Jindal Steel Odisha Ltd (JSOL), a subsidiary of the OP Jindal Group.

The range of steel grades that can be processed includes sophisticated grades such as HSLA, pipe grades and silicon steels. The share of harder material grades is more than 20 per cent. Very thin strips can be rolled reliably and stably by implementation of various innovative rolling technologies. For optimal temperature regulation in the roughing mill, SMS installed the newly developed transfer bar cooling system, which prevents uncontrolled air-cooling during oscillation. By equalising the temperature, product homogeneity is improved. The Hibox heat preservation hoods simplify inspection and maintenance. The heat panels make the finishing train’s rolling behaviour more stable, and JSOL is able to shift the product mix toward smaller final thicknesses and/or higher strength steel grades. Arranged between the second roughing stand and the finishing mill, the mandrel-less coil box forms transfer bar into coils, and equalises the temperature over the transfer bar length. Coiling the transfer bar prevents the inner windings from cooling. Material and heat are accumulated, providing a positive effect on the material to be rolled. The edge heater, located upstream of the finishing mill descaler, utilises inductive heating. Its primary role is to enhance strip edge quality by maintaining optimal pre-rolling temperatures.

SMS implemented the HSM in JSOL’s Angul works in the Indian federal state of Odisha. While it is the first hot strip mill at this location, SMS has previously supplied several metallurgical plants to the Indian steel producer. In 2021, JSOL placed the order with SMS for the erection of the 1,780mm HSM, to be equipped with advanced hot strip production technologies, especially in the rolling of hot strip to thin final gauges. SMS’s main scope of equipment included the primary descaler; roughing stand No.1 in two-high design with attached edger; roughing stand No.2 in four-high design, also with attached edger; transfer bar cooling system; Hibox® heat preservation hoods; mandrel-less coil box; edge heating equipment; drum shear; secondary descaler; a seven-stand finishing mill; laminar cooling; and three down coilers. SMS’s AMOVA integrated business unit supplied a coil conveying system, coil-strapping machines, marking machine and an inspection line. In the roughing mill section, slabs up to 12m in length, with a thickness range from 180 to 260mm and a width range from 800 to 1,680mm, are rolled down to transfer bar thickness. The range of hot strip thicknesses is 1.2 to 20mm. In total, JSOL’s HSM is designed for an annual capacity of five million tons.

The seven-stand finishing mill is equipped with hydraulic adjustment systems, hydraulic loopers and the latest CVC® plus (continuously variable crown) combined work roll shifting and bending systems. SMS group GmbH www.sms-group.com

The finishing mill stands are provided with latest generation actuators for precise and efficient rolling operation
