Wire Expo 2022
Many developments in recent years have been incorporated into machinery such as tubular stranders and bow cablers. These improvements have reduced stopping and changeover time, as well as improving safety by reducing operator intervention. Improvements include accumulators to allow for continuous operation; auto- matic loading and unloading systems to load and unload multiple reels simultaneously; and automatic cutting and taping of cable ends with automatic changeover from one take-up to another. The company has recently seen high de mand for large stranding and armour ing machinery to produce submarine cables.

Delta Tecnic 311 The modernisation of structures and cabling systems is both a cause and a consequence of the emerging world. Masterbatch producer Delta Tecnic states that the climate emergency, companies’ strategies to be at the forefront of tech nology and sustainability, and changes in consumer behaviour are leading to a sce nario in which masterbatch will be instru mental in building efficient, resilient and adaptable systems. This drive to replace and modernise structures wherever possible will require cabling to have a number of advantages. Whether it is cables used for solar, wind or hydro power supply, or for longer transmission lengths, lighting, robotics and transport infrastructure, these are relevant for any manufacturer. Delta Tecnic is emphasising its commit ment to technological and energy ad vancement, offering companies a broad portfolio of colourants and additives designed to work in high-rigour cable compound formulations. The company will showcase its latest cable masterbatch products at Wire Expo. Visitors will have the opportunity to see solutions that help manufacturers streamline production processes and achieve higher quality results. Dilution is the process by which the masterbatch is incorporated into the compound for plastic transformation. The factors that influence the quality of dilution are diverse, including the formulation and pellet size of the masterbatch. Delta Tecnic’s objective is to provide a masterbatch in a reduced format that ensures the fastest possible dilution. The trend towards shorter and faster extruders, which generate cable with less wall thickness in the insulation layer, makes it more difficult to achieve perfect colour homogeneity, but the new small pellet masterbatches can help to improve the results. Davis-Standard, LLC 704 Davis-Standard will highlight wire and cable solutions that support applications in the aerospace, automotive, power cable, construction and communication industries, including aerial cable, building wire, coaxial and composite cable, video pair cable, CATV, THHN and THWN products. The company’s wire and cable equipment is engineered according to customer specifications, with extruders, payoffs and take-ups, accumulators, cooling systems and capstans. Systems include complete machinery solutions for high-temperature aero- space wire, low-voltage automotive cables, fibre optic cables and ducts that improve connectivity, and high output applications involving multi-layer constructions such as nylon over PVC. Requirements for line speed, conductor type, insulating materials, wall thickness range and outside diameter are addressed with technical expertise. Feedscrew and control technology, extruder efficiency, single reel shaftless payoffs, dual flyer payoffs, multi-pass and belt wrap capstans, and dual reel take ups are examples of how Davis-Standard supports customer profitability. These capabilities are further augmented by the equipment portfolio offered by Maillefer, a Davis-Standard company.

Armouring is achieved by two different configurations: large tubular stranders with bullhead configuration, mainly used for fibre optic submarine cables; and planetary armouring lines for heavy power transmission cables. These are produced on large and heavy machines for a high number of wires (eg 144 wires), and are applied by a single or dual cage in tandem operation. The machines also include automated load ing systems to reduce the changeover time. In addition to submarine cables, there has been demand for large cross section cables (127 wires) produced on rigid stranders. These stranders include automatic loading systems, shaped wire stranding heads, heavy compaction systems and water-blocking application systems for yarn and powder. The machines are required to provide consistent and smooth tension across all wires. FLYMCA designs and manufactures its machinery in Spain. The company FLYRO is involved in second-hand equipment for the cable market, and holds a large inventory. Both companies are supported in the USA and Canada by QMS America, which represents them. One of Davis-Standard’s latest develop- ments is the DS Activ-Check™ system – an Industry 4.0 platform for continuous monitoring, preventive maintenance and mobile alerts. The system uses analytical tools based on long-term cloud data storage, along with process and equipment technology algorithms, to help management and production teams identify and improve product quality and line productivity. The use of digital transformation to strengthen operations has shown potential in the extrusion sector, including wire and cable processes. Davis-Standard, LLC www.davis-standard.com
