Further to the Delegated Regulation (EU) 2021/849 published in the Official Journal of the European Union in May 2021, the regulation on Borax Classification, Labelling and Packaging will change from 17 December 2022. Products containing ≥0.3 per cent borax and/or boric acid will be classified as Reprotoxic Category 1B in the European Union. As a result, the hazard statement “H360FD: May damage fertility. May damage the unborn child” will be added to the safety data sheet and the label of these products, accompanied by the “exploding chest” hazard pictogram. In many EU countries the law will there fore require: substitution of products classified as Reprotoxic Cat 1B with non CMR (carcinogenic, mutagenic, reprotox ic) products; the confinement of instal lations using reprotoxic products; or the health, safety and environment depart ment of the concerned sites having to put in place collective/individual protective equipment suitable for the handling of CMR products. Other EU countries will have an incentive to substitute products classified as Reprotoxic Cat 1B without binding measures or equivalent law, but in all EU countries the disposal cost of used borax- containing soaps is likely to increase following their classification as reprotoxic. The REACH authorisation procedure is still pending but, if confirmed, all users of products containing borax or boric acid will be obliged to substitute these products or face very restrictive use measures that will involve factory investments to control the risks as well as a fee of a few tens of thousands of euros. Continuus-Properzi technology includes refining furnaces

The furnaces and combustion division designs and manufactures furnaces for aluminium and copper plants. The company has long experience in metal refining technology and is available for the study and construction of furnaces upon customers’ requests. At wire 2022, Continuus-Properzi will highlight the CO 2 savings obtained through the use of vert-ref furnaces (refining furnaces to recycle scrap) and the technology linked to the production of aluminium ingots. All systems are designed, engineered and produced by Properzi for installation around the world. Through the ingot casting method (track and belt), “Properzi” ingots are produced in both aluminium and copper. With this technology Properzi has managed to obtain ingots with significantly reduced CO 2 emissions. The company claims that using its ingot casting technology can result in savings of more than 280kg of CO 2 per ton of ingots produced. This result has been validated by the BSI Group 8 (British Standards Institution) through an in-depth study.
