Industry’s breath of fresh air Companies have been forced to adapt, change working conditions and, indeed, how they work to pull themselves and colleagues through the last few years. One thing that has been missing is the regular, face-to-face contact we all take for granted. It may be a year, or in some cases two, before industry professionals would meet up at any number of exhibitions throughout the world. It was always a time to catch up, explain new technologies, meet with old friends, make new acquaintances, and secure lucrative business relationships that can be nurtured more freely and easily in person. It is no wonder that wire 2022 will come as a breath of fresh air throughout the industry. Rightly billed as the largest and most important event in our calendar, theweek-long exhibition at the side of the River Rhine inDüsseldorf will once again play a pivotal role in our thoughts. Different it may be, but wire 2022 will again provide the platform companies have sorely missed out on. Our coverage starts on page 90 and features a sample of the exhibiting companies. You can also catch up on all the details by collecting your free copy of EuroWire from our stand, 11 A09. We also cover another exhibition in this issue, with the staging of Wire Expo in Dallas, Texas, USA, running from 7 to 8 June. Turn to page 84 for more details. As if to highlight the good news from our industry, this issue of EuroWire is full of news of expansions (Madem, p16; Emetelle Group, p24), investment (Lämneå Bruk, p10; AlloyWire International, p28) and acquisitions (Magnetic Analysis, p8).

Fred Beck, who is a son of TacTic co-found er Kenneth H Beck and has been serving as VP sales for TacTic at LTI in recent years, commented on the acquisition: “I am very excited about the future and will continue to play an active role in this new venture. It brings with it many opportunities as both companies have developed estab lished products that complement each other with little overlap. Magnetic Analysis Corporation (MAC), a designer and producer of non destructive test instruments and systems, has announced the asset acquisition of TacTic™, a division of Laboratory Testing Inc (LTI), effective 28 February. Originally founded as TAC Technical Instrument Corp in 1962, the company became part of LTI’s operations in 2018. The acquisition will broaden MAC’s range of NDT systems to include automated and specialised immersion, “spin the tube” ultrasonic test systems to detect surface and subsurface defects in round tube, pipe and bar. These systems are particularly applicable to metal producers looking for a system to test small batches of material or frequent diameter size changes. MAC president and CEO Dudley Boden said, “This is a natural fit for us as we have partnered with TacTic for a number of years supplying our Echomac® ultrasonic

New investments for further automation

A visualisation is provided of each wire for connection to components, eliminating the need to read a traditional circuit diagram. “As part of our sincere com- mitment to providing excellent customer service, we are always looking for ways to get our customers what they need as speedy as possible and with the highest quality,” said Lämneå Bruk president Jonas Hagstedt.

Swedish wire machinery manufacturer Lämneå Bruk has made further invest- ments, with the purchase of another nVent Hoffman modification centre, a versatile automation solution for precision machining for holes and cut-outs. The company has also purchased several nVent Hoffman PWA 2000s (personal wiring assistants), including crimping stations and printers, to automate the entire preparation and installation of the electrical department. Lämneå Bruk’s automation begins with switchgear planning in the office, which creates the necessary data for the PWA systems. From there, the automated wire preparation, cutting and installation take place in the workshop. Electrical department personnel receive all the information needed to install the wire, which is produced just in time by the PWA 2000.

A switch to borax-free lubricants ahead of new regulations

of the European Union in May 2021, the regulation on Borax Classification, Labelling and Packaging will change from 17 December 2022. Products containing ≥0.3 per cent borax and/or boric acid will be classified as Reprotoxic Category 1B in the EuropeanUnion. As a result, the hazard statement “H360FD: May damage fertility. May damage the unborn child” will be added to the safety data sheet and the label of these products, accompanied by the “exploding chest” hazard pictogram. The REACH authorisation procedure is still pending but, if confirmed, all users of products containing borax or boric acid will be obliged to substitute these prod ucts or face very restrictive use measures. Condat prioritises the monitoring of substances used and the improvement of the formulation of these products. The company has expanded its range of borax-free wire drawing lubricants over the years to meet the most demanding applications. Its borax-free surface coat

Lubricant producer Condat is taking a lead in alerting the wire drawing industry about regulation changes occurring in the European Union regarding borax, which may impact investments and safety procedures. Borax has traditionally been used in two types of wire drawing products – surface coatings and dry drawing lubricants – but the substance has been controversial in thewire drawing industry formore than 15 years. Often employed in wire preparation after acid picking and phosphating, borax coating is used to improve the pick up of the dry drawing lubricant and to neutralise any acid residues on the wire. It is sometimes incorporated as a high performance additive in dry drawing lubricants. However, due to its chemical composition, it has been identified several times by the European Union for the potential reprotoxic danger it represents. Further to the Delegated Regulation (EU) 2021/849 published in the Official Journal

Condat produces a range of borax-free lubricants

ings offer a higher roughness and deposit weight, plus increased resistance to hu midity pick-up compared to traditional borax baths. The company’s borax-free dry drawing lubricants insomecasesevendemonstrate increased performance over traditional borax-containing products. With high to low fat content, and high to low softening points, there are borax-free lubricants suitable for all types of application. Winoa’s new identity Winoa Group has renewed its branding, with an aim to position itself as not only as an abrasives manufacturer, but also as a partner for eco-friendly surface preparation solutions. The company used to market services and technologies under its brandWAbrasives. To differentiate its range, the group is creating two new brands: W Care, related to the services on offer, and W Tech for all complementary products, tools and technologies. The group is also taking this opportunity to announce its growth plan for the coming years, based on three pillars: the offer agenda with a portfolio expansion; the green agenda with new sustainable commitments; and the digital agenda with Industry 4.0 implementations. This vision towards the future is supported by a redesigned Winoa logo. The grey colour refers to its core business, metallic surfaces, and abrasive medias, while the green dot represents its involvement in sustainable development, as the company is preparing a global reduction carbon emission plan, and the fact that all abrasives manufactured by Winoa are 100 per cent recyclable. The group is also looking for global alignment of all of its subsidiaries. As it has grown through acquisitions, some subsidiaries have kept their name, not capitalising on the Winoa identity. A plan has been launched to unify all of the group’s entities under the Winoa name. Winoa www.winoagroup.com

Three-roll RSB for new greenfield rolling mill project

Lämneå Bruk expands production facilities For Swedish wire machinery manufacturer Lämneå Bruk, 2021 was a turnaround point. After a temporary drop in sales due to the Covid-19 pandemic and worldwide uncertainties in 2020, the company not only recovered, but also recorded one of the best results in its 100+ year history. For 2022, the company’s plans include expanding its production area and investing in new equipment to move further towards process automation and Industry 4.0. Two additional halls for assembling wire machinery and equipment are currently being built behind the existing workshop. Both halls are expected to be finished in the next few months. The intention is to eventually use one of the new buildings for welding robots, which will help make production more efficient and bring Lämneå Bruk closer to a fully automated and streamlined production process. £500,000 warehouse investment set to spearhead growth Alloy Wire International (AWI) is spending more than £500,000 on the construction of a dedicated 2,880-square-foot warehouse alongside its existing Narrowboat Way factory in the UK. Designed to help the firm meet increasing global customer demand for its material, the investment includes the doubling of electrical capacity with an application submitted to increase input to allow for the installation of more machines and a new furnace. It will also mean AWI can hold up to 400 tonnes of stock when the expansion is completed in June, and this will safeguard security of supply to its clients for the foreseeable future. Managing director designate Tom Mander commented, “Interest is coming from all the markets we supply, whether that is oil and gas and nuclear, or spring making, medical and advanced engineering. This has given us the confidence to press the button on our latest investment and the additional warehousing we’re going to need.” Other investments planned for the next twelve months include a multi-head spooling machine in the annealing section, and a wet drawing machine for very fine wires between 0.06 and 0.15mm (0.002" to 0.005").

The new warehouse will allow AWI to hold up to 400 tonnes of stock

exotic alloys, such as Monel, Hastelloy, Nimonic and Rene 41. The latest addition is Inconel 617, a nickel-chromium-cobalt molybdenum-aluminium alloy that offers a combination of increased strength and stability at elevated temperatures (up to 1,100°C/2,012°F) while retaining the high-temperature corrosion resistance of Inconel alloy 601. Mr Mander added, “Our staff continue to go above and beyond to meet the requirements of our customers, delivering the best quality wire within two to three weeks of the order being placed. Few companies can match this delivery performance. The technical team has also been busy at work exploring the possibility of using our material in additive manufacturing and the introduction of new alloys in our range.” AlloyWire International www.alloywire.com
