Springing into exhibitions As we head towards spring, the exhibition season gets well and truly underway with the 7 th edition of Global Industrie first on the calendar, from 11 to 14 March in Lyon, France. The event is billed as the ‘annual marker for the industry’s achievements, progress, vision and future prospects’, bringing people together to present their innovations, exchange ideas and catch up on industrial trends, with nearly 50,000 professionals expected to attend. Read more on this by turning to page 17. You can also collect your copy of EuroWire from the Media Stand. This will be closely followed by the staging of wire Eurasia in Istanbul, Turkey, from 9 to 12 April. More than 350 exhibitors from 20 different countries are expected, along with 15,000 visitors from 75 countries at the Tüyap Istanbul Fair and Congress Center. You can read all about some of the exhibitors by turning to page 55 in this issue of EuroWire . Continuing our regular popular feature, we turn our attention to Italian companies within the wire and cable industries who are forging ahead with new technologies, ideas, plans and innovations with our Italy Showcase feature, starting on page 49. Also new for this year is our feature on associations from within the industry worldwide. In this issue, we look at the Swiss Competence Cluster (SCC), a recently formed association but bringing together some notable achievements from already well-established businesses. Whether it is cable manufacturing, metrology or tooling, SCC has, through its members, the expertise to tackle most of their challenges. Member companies are all individual with their own specialities, but sharing the same core values. You can catch up with news of SCC by turning to page 46. Intensive technological discussions for the design and construction for a solution for rolling seamless hollow sections paid dividends, with voestalpine

Blast furnace 4 at ROGESA, as viewed from the water treatment plant
Optimising the durability and wear monitoring of a blast furnace
“We are delighted to continue our partnership with ROGESA on this important project. Our advanced hearth lining technology enables ROGESA to extend the life of their furnace, operate them more safely, and prevent forced shutdowns. After the big re-line in 2003, it makes us proud to continue collaborating here in Dillingen.” operations manager of the blast furnace depart- ment at ROGESA, added, “We greatly appreciate SMS group in Germany for their flexibility and prompt responsiveness to our requests, which were critical to the success of this project. Their expert solutions, par- ticularly their expertise in hearth lining and multi thermocouple sensor probes, ensure the durability and safety of our operations.” SMS group GmbH www.sms-group.com ROGESA www.rogesa.de Dr Jürgen Hochhaus,
including carbon blocks, ceramic cups and refractory materials, which are known for their durability and reliability. Well-designed equipment offers thermal insulation by maintaining the extremely high temperatures required for iron ore reduction. In addition, it offers corrosion resistance by avoiding chemical attacks from molten iron and slag, and structural support by withstanding mechanical stresses and maintaining the furnace’s shape. The multi thermocouple sensor probes are designed to precisely determine and track hearth lining wear, ensuring enhanced monitoring and operational efficiency. The project is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2025, with a shutdown time of only 55 days. It is the latest undertaking in a long-standing relationship between SMS group and ROGESA, with previous collaborations focusing on hot blast stoves and refractory-related projects. Martina Engelmann, project manager at SMS group in Germany, commented,
ROGESA Saar GmbH) in Dillingen, Germany has commissioned SMS group to carry out a comprehensive modernisation of a blast furnace, to extend its service life and ensure effective monitoring of the hearth lining. The contract includes the planning and delivery of the Paul Wurth hearth lining and multi thermocouple sensor probes (MTPs), as well as technical support during the installation phase. The required upgrade is based on measurements taken in 2023, which indicated that the wear on the hearth of the facility’s blast furnace 4 is more advanced than expected, and that the remaining wall thickness is approaching the wear limit. Blast furnace 4, built in the late 1970s, was enlarged and re-lined by Paul Wurth in 2003. It has a usable volume of 2,460m 3 and an output of 6,400 tons per day. The last reline on the blast furnace took place in 2016. For the new furnace lining, SMS plans to use Paul Wurth hearth lining technology, (Roheisengesellschaft

Rolling mill supplied for production of hollow sections voestalpine Tubulars in Austria has successfully commissioned a profile rolling mill engineered by Friedrich Kocks GmbH & Co KG. Following the completion of all work and commissioning, the new equipment is now fully integrated into the hot tube rolling mill at the Kindberg site in Styria. The award of the contract was preceded by intensive technological discussion of the design and construction of a solution for rolling seamless hollow sections. The centrepiece of the profile rolling mill, named PWW 530/4, consists of four consecutive 530mm stands, each equipped with two horizontal and vertical rolls facing each other. The rolls are individually driven. Based on Kocks’s three-roll stand design, they feature calibre adjustment and allow for fast roll changes, providing flexibility in production planning. The scope of supply also included the corresponding equipment for the roll shop. voestalpine Tubulars is now capable of producing seamless, hot-rolled square and rectangular hollow sections up to large formats and wall thicknesses. IWCS reports successful cable and connectivity forum
context and expert commentary for each of the detailed innovations presented during the technical sessions. The total number of attendees increased, representing an international audience from 24 countries. With a high amount of turnover and retirement in the wire and cable industry, IWCS is targeting a broader range of attendees, including academics and professionals who are early in their career – 35 per cent of attendees were new to the event in 2024, as were 12 companies participating in the supplier exhibition. Increased overseas participation was also evident at the 2024 event, owing to reduced travel restrictions as the world continues to rebound from the pandemic. Attendees from Japan travelled nearly 7,000 miles to attend. at Lowell, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Virginia Tech and the University of Delaware to experience IWCS hosted students from the University of Massachusetts
IWCS welcomed attendees to the 73 rd annual Cable & Connectivity Industry Forum in Providence, Rhode Island, USA, in October 2024. The past three events have taken place “in person”, following virtual events in 2020 and 2021 due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Attendees and event organisers reported that the 2024 event was the first time the atmosphere and programme felt truly back to normal since the pandemic, with strong quantity and quality of presentations and an energetic exhibition hall. “Overall, the 2024 IWCS Cable & Connectivity Industry Forum was one of the most dynamic and intriguing conferences we have ever produced,” said David Kiddoo, IWCS CEO/ director. The content of the papers and presentations in the 14 technical sessions were described as “high calibre”, and two in-depth supplemental breakout programmes highlighted the energy transition and advancements in sustainability and recycling. These sessions were created to provide further
expert instruction during the courses and enjoy the technical symposium and networking opportunities with industry professionals. Multiple academic researchers contributed technical papers to the event. The next IWCS Forum will take place from 27 to 30 October 2025, at the David L Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. IWCS encourages international travellers to secure a valid visa for USA travel, as wait times for visa applications may be lengthy.
