Ostend. Taken together, Seastar and Mermaid have the capacity to power the equivalent of around 500,000 Belgian households every year. The first PPA between Borealis and Eneco, signed in 2020, covers delivery of wind power from Mermaid to Borealis’s Belgian operations as of January 2021. The new PPA is for the supply of renewable electricity to Borealis from the Seastar wind park. The renewable electricity generated within the framework of the second PPA – around 1.5 TWh over ten years – will lower Scope 2 emissions (greenhouse gas emissions stemming from the generation of energy purchased) at Borealis operations in Belgium by approximately 22,300 tons per year. The PPAs represent progress towards realising the objective of increasing the share of renewables in the electricity mix to 40 per cent by 2025, and ensuring that by 2030, 100 per cent of the electricity used to power Borealis operations in

Borealis, a provider of advanced and sustainable polyolefin solutions, and Eneco, an integrated sustainable energy company, have signed a second ten year power purchase agreement (PPA) to supply renewable electricity for Borealis production operations in Belgium. Eneco, which has an exclusive off take agreement for the entire output generated at the SeaMade offshore wind farm in the Belgian North Sea, will supply around 150 GWh each year to Borealis for ten years, starting in 2024. With a total operational capacity of approximately 487 MW, SeaMade is the largest wind farm in the Belgian North Sea. It comprises two offshore concessions commissioned at the end of 2020 – Seastar (252 MW) and Mermaid (235 MW) – each with two offshore substations. The project combines basic research with applied research and is designed to help small and medium-sized mechanical engineering companies gain knowledge and market advantage by using digital methods in product development. In simple terms, a digital twin is a virtual copy of a process or a machine that enables the simulation of operational sequences under conditions that are close to reality. In this way, production processes can be simplified, resources can be used more sustainably, costs can be reduced and the development of innovations can be accelerated. The resources of the foundation will be used to finance the post of a research assistant who will, among other things, initiate interdisciplinary activities in the research area.

Management buy-out at AWI Alloy Wire International (AWI), a UK manufacturer of round, flat and profile wire, has completed a management buy-out, as it targets £15mn annual sales for the first time in its 77-year history.

The trio have also initiated a near-£1mn investment drive that will see new wet drawing and single-hole dry drawing machines arrive during the course of the year, along with an annealing line spooler and several hundred tonnes of raw material. “This is another major milestone in the history of AWI and gives us the platform to capitalise on recent growth and massive export opportunities,” said managing director Tom Mander. “The new owners have over 45 years’ combined experience of working here, so it was a natural progression for us to step forward and take the business on, with previous MD Mark Venables moving to chairman for the next five years and R&D director Angus Hogarth taking a consultancy role.” He continued, “There’s something very special about this business, and this MBO ensures we maintain and cultivate this for the next 75 years. We will continue to focus on our USPs, which include delivering the fastest industry lead times, world class manufacturing quality and an expanding range of exotic alloys.” The company manufactures round, flat and profile wire in more than 60 exotic alloys, such as Inconel, Monel, Hastelloy, Nimonic and Waspaloy. Steel wire production with EZero dies and diamond-coated solutions

Esteves dies and inserts

Esteves says that this exclusive technology has been tested and proven to deliver outstanding results in many wire drawing processes. Advantages of EZero dies over traditional products include improved die-life, and diameter stability and consistent roundness throughout the die lifecycle, particularly in ferrous wires and demanding hard-wire alloys. With available diameters ranging from 0.02 to 0.8mm, one of the benefits of EZero dies is their durability compared to traditional monocrystalline and polycrystalline diamond (PCD) dies. Esteves claims that EZero dies can outlast traditional dies by a significant margin, reducing the frequency of die changeovers and increasing machine uptime. Diamond Coated (DC) dies and drawing inserts for pressure die systems provide enhanced wear-resistance, allowing users to maximise output while minimising downtime due to maintenance or replacement. The DC technology is an alternative to traditional tungsten carbide inserts and offers a claimed 10 to 20 times their lifespan. In addition, lower friction forces lead to improved productivity and energy savings. The diamond layer ensures a smooth wire surface and improved diameter accuracy, making it suitable for low, medium and high carbon steel, as well as stainless steel and welding wire. To complement the introduction of the new technologies, Esteves Group’s ‘Team Deutschland’ has been strengthened with the addition of Tomasz Weidel as a business development specialist for the steel industry, working with Alina Scheitza and Anita Silicka in a team dedicated to the German market. Esteves Group www.estevesgroup.com

For more than 100 years, Esteves Group has been a provider of tooling and services for the wire and cable industry in Germany. The company has now strengthened its focus on this market by reinforcing its technical sales team with a specialist for the steel industry. This will provide exclusive attention to the German steel market and ensure the company can respond to the specific needs of the industry. Esteves Group’s latest offerings – EZero and Diamond Coated dies and drawing inserts – provide efficient production processes that ensure precision while minimising waste material in the wire drawing. EZero dies are made using a diamond innovation that consists of carbon nanoparticles.
