Measurement and control instruments
during the drawing process or for off-line measurements, fitted with accessories. The wire range covered is 5µm to 2mm. For extrusion processes, Cersa provides the LPS-3-H to monitor diameters and detect lumps and neckdowns in a single product for larger wire and cable diameters (0.3 to 5mm). The solution combines a diameter gauge and a flaw detector in one box. For optical fibre measuring, the company offers a complete solution to ensure high quality certification during the drawing process. In 2021, Cersa released its new solution for wire/cable/surface defect detection. The SQM is capable of detecting defects that may appear on the surface during drawing or extrusion processes. The instrument offers high resolution and real time detection of surface defects such as scratches, die marks, impurities, bubbles or particles in the insulation, and works with round products (20 to 2,000µm) and metallic surfaces. The company’s single spoolers are usually supplied for three- or five-ton capacity, and for multiple size spools. A motorised wire layer provides wire distribution along the spool. The spoolers can also be equipped with tilting devices. DEM’s “goose neck” spooler operates with small wire diameters from 2 to 5mm. Wire freely falls down in spirals onto a bottom pick-up stand to form a vertical dead coil. The wire is collected on a double position holder, which is manually moveable. DEM’s range of spoolers and coilers reach speeds of 25m/s. They are all complemented with systems that allow precise control of the laying pattern, including the traverse oscillated pattern, when required. DEM SpA www.demgroup.com
Established in France in 1981, Cersa-MCI designs and manufactures measuring devices and control instruments for fine wires, cables and optical fibres. The company’s portfolio of solutions to help customers enhance production quality includes advanced technologies such as interferometers, diffraction and cameras to ensure high-speed measurements and high accuracy. Its sensors can be used on- or off-line for non-contact measurement applications. In the mid-1980s, Cersa launched its first device for fine wire measurement. The LDS is still available, in one- or two axis models, for diameter monitoring

Wire spooling technology taken further
Italian mechanical engineering company DEM SpA offers a variety of solutions in wire spooling, including vertical double automatic spoolers with optional automatic unloading and handling systems), vertical and horizontal single spoolers, and static coilers. The vertical double automatic spoolers are normally sized for spools of three to five tons, but can be designed for further capacity. The motorised layer unit achieves consistent wire distribution. A measuring device stops the spooler once the pre-set length is reached. When the spool is full, the wire is automatically cut, and the tail is clamped onto the spool structure. The unit lifts up and rotates, taking the full spool to the unloading side, and an insertion device automatically hooks the wire on the next spool, so coiling can continue. If the vertical double automatic spooler is equipped with a fully automatic
