Rod SB cleaning for reduced die friction and wear Advertorial on behalf of Decalub

Installed in-line after a simple rod reverse bending descaler, the SB (Smooth-Brush) system removes excess rod scale, converting the scale into ultra-hard micro-abrading rotating pads that provide a white metal clean satin finish. It is suitable for dry cleaning applications, H/C and L/C, including 0.98 % C, eliminating the need for acid cleaning. Continuously liberated rod scale pads provide receptive 3 to 5-micron bonding sites (similar to phosphate crystalline morphology), enhancing lubricant pick up and adherence at high drawing speeds. This enables powder lubricant to be chemically and mechanically interlocked to the rod surface, forming a high-performance anti-friction and anti-wear conversion coating that is found to perform comparably to or better than zinc phosphate or other in-line wet pre-coating chemicals. The SB system is also used to clean drawn wire in-line prior to direct galvanising, eliminating the need for acid and other aggressive wet cleaning chemicals.

Production of ultra-fine wires

KJM has developed and sold non-contact measurement instruments for the wire and cable industry for more than 20 years. With the aim of providing quality to long-standing clients and newly acquired customers, KJM provides convenient services both on- and off-line. On-line products include diameter measurement instruments that measure fine wires and the measurement of shaped wire and cable. For off-line applications, the company can supply drawing die measurements of diameter and ovality, and die profile calculations. CEO Klaus Jakob and his team developed a new technology to draw and measure the finest wires. This technology makes it easier to perform accurate calculations and to efficiently execute otherwise laborious undertakings. KJM has simplified the production process of very-high-tension strength straight wiring. This technology draws the wires delicately, resulting in material characteristics such as flexibility and agility in even the highest of tensile strength wires. Examples of the company’s portfolio include stainless steel wires from 10 to 25 µm with tensile strength up to 4,000 N/mm 2 ; and EDM wire from 50 to 70 µm in diameter with low tensile strength. Other materials and alloys with diameters smaller than 50 µm are also possible. The company’s manufacturing and production site is located in Bonsweiher, in the south of Frankfurt, Germany, and has the capacity for 30 million metres per month, with a network of highly qualified raw material suppliers.

Another convenient KJM service allows customers to simply provide the wires and wait for KJM to customise and tailor them to their specific needs. For example, a customer could provide a stainless steel 40 µm scrap wire, and KJM could process it into 28 µm or 20 µm diameter wire, or whatever spec is required. KJM GmbH www.kjm-ag.de
