Rolling technology for high quality wire rod

The plants at the Verona facilities meet advanced quality standards, and Acciaierie di Verona is UNI EN ISO 9001:2015, UNI EN ISO 14001:2015 and BS OHSAS 18001:2007 certified. The Verona steel mills are also UNI EN ISO 14021 certified for recycled content, as well as being certified according to the UNI INAIL:2001 Guidelines standard. The rolling mill is equipped with two independent rolling lines that have active temperature control throughout the entire process. Starting from a 12m-long, 160mm square billet, the lines can produce smooth wire rod with a diameter of between 5.5 and 25mm, and ribbed wire rod with a diameter of between 6 and 18mm, at a speed of up to 100m/s, in coils weighing up to 2,500 kg each. The new rolling mill in Verona will consolidate the company’s position in the low carbon steel market, while also allowing the group to expand its range by being able to supply medium and high carbon wire rod.

Data is processed through special software and two automation and control levels to allow the rolling process to be adjusted according to the required diameter and quality. The information collected is used to make accurate comparative analyses of the production data at various stages of the process, continuously improving quality performance. Magnetic technology tools such as HiSection, or laser technology systems such as HiGauge and HiProfile (also supplied by Danieli), are used to assess quality standards during the rolling process by constantly monitoring the section and weight of the rolled product. These latest-generation systems ensure high standards along the entire rolled product, for diameter uniformity with dimensional tolerances and ovality within the limits set out by DIN standards. The products are subjected to strict chemical controls such as spectrometric and wet chemistry techniques for the chemical characterisation of steels. Quality control is completed with mechanical tests, mainly to determine the strength and ductility of steels, and technological and microstructural tests.

The Pittini Group has implemented a new rolling mill at the Acciaierie di Verona steel plant in Verona, Italy. The industrial plan for Acciaierie di Verona aimed to enhance one of the historic sites of the Italian steel industry through a significant modernisation programme, while also creating an innovative wire rod rolling mill. The plan, which will be completed in 2021, entails a major technological upgrade of the production facilities while preserving the continuity of operations and the employment levels at the production site. Also included in the upgrade are the infrastructure and facilities to improve the working environments. The Pittini Group’s new wire rod mill has been designed and built in compliance with the requirements set out by Industry 4.0, with the application of the innovative Danieli H3 technology. The entire production process is fully automated on the basis of production and treatment process cards. Advanced sensors installed throughout the plant send more than 50,000 pieces of information online to monitor efficiency and productivity in real time.
