THE automotive cable industry requires the highest standards in the realm of low voltage cables. Firstly, international specifications such as ISO 6722 (class C), SAE J1127 (cables STX and SGX) and J1128 (cables TXL, GXL and SGL) must be met. Secondly, to ensure cost-effectiveness and maximum efficiency, cable producers demand compounds with consistent quality that are capable of reaching elevated production speeds. Constantly seeking innovation, Mixer SpA developed its series of cross-linkable compounds dedicated to automotive cables and, since 2016, has had an annual production of around 1,000 tons across several customers worldwide. The product portfolio includes cross-linkable compounds, either via CV-line or eBeam developed for different applications. As an example, for battery cables there is Ekopren® 3IS901/3IR901, characterised by low hardness and suitable for both ISO 6722 and SAE J1127. Given the specific needs of customers, there are three different solutions for primary cables. Ekopren® 3IS911/3IR911 was developed to be cost-effective while fulfilling only the requirements of SAE J1128. Ekopren® 3IS951/3IR951, however, is the highest performing compound, capable of meeting SAE J1128 and ISO 6722 with insulation thickness of 0.2 to 0.3mm. Halfway, Ekopren® 3IS931/3IR931 is a compromise between cost-effectiveness and performance, being suitable for both SAE J1128 and ISO 6722 with insulation thickness of more than 0.3mm. Thanks to the quality consistency, customers are able to process Mixer’s automotive compounds at high production speed, up to 1,000m/min for the small cross-section cables. For customers, an elevated production speed means more efficiency, and Mixer is already working on the next generation of compounds capable of being processed at even higher speed, up to 1,300m/min.
