Zumbach’s in-line complex profile measurement and monitoring

COMMITTED to extensive research and development activities, Zumbach has continuously grown as one of the worldwide manufacturers of in-line measuring and control systems. Top priority at the company continues to be customer relationships through local presence combined with proven products, services, personal consulting and support. Zumbach’s Profilemaster® systems are developed from a core set of proprietary mega-pixel camera/laser modules and software technologies. The application of these technologies has been adapted to serve specific measurement, monitoring and surface flaw detection needs for extruded plastic and rubber tubes, hoses, profiles, wire and cable, wood, plastic composites, steel rod, bar, profiles and more. Depending on the customer application and product dimension, the company offers a full range of Profilemaster gauges, including models for small precision profiles starting from a dimension of 0.5mm (0.02"), cold formed tubes and profiles as well as medium-size products, hot or cold, to dimensions of 600mm (23.6"). Profilemaster systems are available with between one and eight laser/camera modules continuously measuring the cross section of the moving profile. A powerful PC-based processor combines the captured line images of the individual cameras to yield the momentary cross-section of the profile.

The nominal values for the profile can be directly imported from CAD design files, which allows easy and problem-free configuration of the device. Changes in speed and twist within normal limits have no influence on the measurement precision. Zumbach Electronic AG – Switzerland Website : www.zumbach.com

All relevant dimensions such as width, height, angle and radius or other geometric quantities are computed to characterise the full cross-sectional picture. An operator-friendly graphic display of this data allows the product to be monitored during production.

No. 837 is a 1,450ºF electrically heated tempering furnace from Grieve, currently used for pre-heating prior to welding and various post-welding heat treatments, at a customer’s facility. Workspace dimensions of this furnace are 60" wide x 60" deep x 60" high. 180 kW installed in nickel chrome wire coils, supported by a stainless steel framework, provides heat to the load. A rear wall-mounted, heat-resisting alloy recirculating fan, powered by a 25-hp motor with V-belt drive and water-cooled bearings, is also on-board this unit. Eight-inch-thick insulated walls comprise 3" of 2,300ºF ceramic fibre and 5" block insulation, while 7" floor insulation is made from 5" of 2,300ºF firebrick and 2" of block insulation. No. 837 features an air-operated vertical lift door, as well as numerous safety and control components, including a programming and recording temperature recorder, SCR power controller, manual reset excess temperature controller with 1,450ºF electric tempering furnace
