MoU to drive green steel development initiatives in Indonesia

Argo Sangkaeng, president director of GRP, said, “We are very enthusiastic about hosting this FGD event with SMS, and we believe that this collaboration will bring positive changes to the Indonesian steel industry. We hope to explore innovative and sustainable solutions that will help reduce the environmental impact of steel production.” Speakers at the event included Tim Kleier, head of green steel at SMS, who shared insights into pioneering decarbonisation strategies and the implications of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) for the industry, emphasising the route towards a greener and more sustainable steel sector.

As part of their partnership, SMS group and PT Gunung Raja Paksi Tbk co-hosted a two-day ‘Focus Group Discussion (FGD)’ event in Jakarta, Indonesia. Under the banner Green Steel in the Digital Age: A Focus Group Exploring Carbon Footprint Reduction , it brought together key stake- holders in the Indonesian steel industry. The event saw the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) QED Wire Lines Inc QED specialises in equipment for in-line heat-treating, cleaning and coating of steel wire. Its furnaces are custom built for multi-strand annealing, stress relieving, patenting and tempering processes. With patented flow technology, the fluid systems integrate cleaning efficiency with high wire speeds. The liquid metal furnaces apply heavy and commercial coatings of zinc, aluminium and Galfan®. Lis Soares, head of energy management at SMS, explored strategies for quantifying and mitigating carbon emissions in steel production while navigating the complex landscape of carbon taxes. Bernhard Steenken, co chief sales officer, India and Asia Pacific at SMS group, looked at green technologies aimed at curtailing carbon emissions in steel production. He went on to say, “We are delighted to participate in this Focus Group Discussion together with GRP. We believe that this collaboration will have a significant positive impact on the steel industry in Indonesia.
