Passing on the baton: changes in TesT management
TesT GmbH is a German engineering specialist in testing machines and measuring systems, delivering solutions and services for components and materials testing. The company was founded 26 years ago by Dr Axel Hunsche, Therese Havemann and Klaus Havemann, who contributed their experience in measurement and testing technology and mechanical engineering.
This founding generation is now seeing a second generation commit to the family business: Julia Kiewitter (née Hunsche), Arne Havemann and Jan Havemann are taking over the management of TesT as co-managing directors. The successors have been established in the company for years and have passed through all company divisions in various roles. In addition, due to their respective educations in business administration,
physics and mechanical engineering, the new management trio complement each other professionally regarding the orientation of the company. Fastener Fair Italy postponed
Mack Brooks Exhibitions has announced new dates for Fastener Fair Italy. The event, originally scheduled to be held in November this year, will now take place from 30 November to 1 December 2022, at Fiera Milano City, Italy. the earlier news of Fastener Fair Stuttgart’s postponement. Due to the overlap in product categories, exhibitors and visitors between the two shows, the decision was made to also postpone Fastener Fair Italy, as an extended period between the shows will give the fastener and fixing industry more time to ensure that the products and The announcement followed

Würth purchases ORR Safety to deliver expanded safety solutions
Würth Industry North America (WINA)/ Northern Safety & Industrial (NSI) has acquired ORR Safety, one of the largest privately held safety companies in the USA. WINA is part of the Würth Group fastener distribution company. Since 1948, ORR Safety has provided personal protective equipment (PPE) and related safety services, helping to protect hundreds of thousands of workers. It has four distribution facilities across the USA. The acquisition of ORR Safety will add depth and diversity to Würth Industry’s

Tanner selected as distributor for maximum security screw
Tanner Bolt & Nut Inc of Brooklyn, New York, USA, has reached an agreement with Parker Fasteners to become the exclusive master distributor in the United States for its Lock-Out® maximum security screw. The new Lock-Out security fastener features a patented drive that is engineered to perform in high-torque applications. The distinctive oval centre pin and multiple drive/key combinations
give customers the option to select higher levels of security in a tamper-proof fastener. Installation bits are not available commercially, and will only be sold through Tanner. Lock-Out is available in various head styles, threads, diameters, lengths, materials and finishes. Diameters range from ¼" to 5 / 8 ", M1.4 to M16, and #0 to #10, with lengths up to 12" for certain diameters. Materials available include carbon steel; stainless
steel 302HQ, 304, 316 and A286; and brass alloy steel 4037 and 8740. For maximum protection of property or products, Lock-Out can be manufactured with a unique drive pattern that is exclusive to the customer. Made-to-order products typically ship in eight to ten weeks.

Support for Danish offshore wind foundation project
Bumax, a Swedish manufacturer of stain- less steel fasteners, and its sister company Bufab Denmark have partnered with the Danish CeJacket project to develop more efficient methods to manufacture jacket structures for offshore wind turbines. The concept is to manufacture jackets in modules as opposed to whole structures, to streamline manufacture and assembly. Bumax, along with Danish industry and academic partners, was invited to inves- tigate fixed-foundation solutions for con- structing large offshore wind turbines in deep water. Tests during the project con- cluded that the company’s fasteners would be suitable for the design and construction of modular and durable foundations. Bumax provided fasteners for the project partners to test. Stud bolts, washers and nuts in the stainless steel Bumax 88 grade for marine applications were provided, as they offer corrosion resistance to the harsh saltwater environments, as well as high strength to ensure a maintenance- free solution throughout a wind turbine’s design life. The 2019 CeJacket Splash Zone Report by Force Technology, which documented three tests with Bumax 88, concluded that “the stainless steel Bumax 88 mechanical fasteners and stainless bolt extenders did not display any signs of pitting or crevice corrosion, nor did they display any signs of cracks in the stud and nut base metal after testing.” Bufab Denmark managing director Robert Svendsen said, “The use of high-strength,

corrosion-resistant Bumax products can be a good choice for demanding marine applications as they can reduce lifecycle costs and safeguard large capital investments, such as wind turbines – as the CeJacket project has highlighted.” Lars Holm, CEO of Bumax, commented, “There is a need for innovative founda- tions since the global market for offshore wind power continues to grow, with wind turbines getting larger and being con- structed in deeper water. This requires different foundations and structures com- pared with conventional fixed-foundation wind turbines in relatively shallow waters.” Some of these large deep-water turbines will require jacket structures – steel substructures that are traditionally used in the oil and gas industry to support offshore rigs at water depths greater than 100m. The challenges for such structures include how to cost-effectively construct them while ensuring the use of high- strength and corrosion-resistant materials.
A potential modular jacket structure solution with bolted connections would require stainless steel fasteners that can withstand the corrosion conditions throughout the different parts of the structure. This includes both above and below the waterline, and within the crucial ‘splash zone’, where corrosion conditions can be more severe due to repeated wet and dry cycles and build-up of salt deposits. The bolted connections must also have a high strength and provide a long-life, maintenance-free fastener solution in all these areas. Longer lasting bolts The performance of threaded fasteners – screws, nuts, and bolts – is critical in commercial engineering. The Fastener Quality Act of 1990 was enacted by Congress in the USA after several high- profile fastener failures, such as the San Francisco bridge collapse, according to the National Institutes of Standards and Technology.

The pressure is delivered with enough force to generate plastic deformation, compressing a layer of the metal so that it resists damage from foreign objects, corrosion fatigue, fretting, stress corrosion cracking and other common damage mechanisms. “The LPB process provides a means of introducing an optimal compressive residual stress in the thread root where failures occur,” explained Doug Hornbach, CEO of Lambda Research, Inc, the research and materials testing laboratory that is part of Lambda Technologies Group. “Manufacturing processes used to form threads do not produce the compression that can be generated with LPB. Shot peening, which is a widely used surface enhancement method, will dimple and distort the thread face while not adequately treating the thread root. LPB works because we can design custom-
shaped tooling that fits into the root of the thread.” Lambda conducted the experiment on steel, but LPB can be performed on almost any alloy. “The speed at which we can treat the screws and bolts is another major benefit of the process,” commented Paul Prevéy, CEO of Surface Enhancement Technologies (SET), thedivisionof Lambda Technologies Group that develops surface treatment solutions for commercial engi- neering applications. “LPB is performed on conventional CNC machines. Lambda Technologies Group has released a study showing how threaded fastener fatigue life can be improved by using compressive residual stress. In an experiment conductedon a threaded rod manufactured from B7 steel (AISI 4140, ASTM A193), Lambda Technologies used low plasticity burnishing (LPB) to introduce high compressive residual stress into a threaded fillet. Fatigue testing showed the LPB samples had a fatigue life 15 times greater than the untreated specimens. LPB® is a patented mechanical process that applies pressure to the surface of

Clipped washers have a flat edge on either the outside diameter (OD), inside diameter (ID) or both. This flat edge helps prevent the washer from rotating in applications, especially when space is limited and component performance is critical. Applications that use clipped washers occur in industries such as automotive, marine, aerospace and medical. “Clipped washers, also referred to as D-washers, are generally used in applications where space limitations do not allow the use of a flat round washer, as well as when keeping an assembly stationary is required,” said Chuck Kersey, assistant sales manager. “Clipped washers can be used with shafts, rods or mating parts that are shaped like a ‘D’.” The functionality of the clipped washers comes from providing a flat bearing surface within assemblies. They are generally used under the head of a bolt and/or a nut to disperse loads as well as to prevent the washer from turning in the application. They are mounted with the flat edge of the washer facing a flat surface or recessed hole to prevent rotation. Clipped washers are available in steel, stainless steel and aluminium, as well as over 2,000 other stock metallic and non- metallic materials to meet specific applications needs. Taking nail manufacturing to the next level
Changes in supply chain, increasing raw material prices, higher requirements for qualified labour and a focus on sustainability all demand new ways of gaining efficiency in wire nail production. Bolted connections can bear significant responsibility, such as in railway or aeronautical engineering. The Junker test is a preferred quality assurance method to determine what a bolted connection can withstand and howmuch time will pass before it loosens. The test is particularly used to measure the service life of a bolted connection under dynamic transverse load. However, the established method has weaknesses. For example, it has only been possible in a vibration test stand to adjust the transverse stroke without specimen before the test. During the test, the actual resulting stroke declines because the bolted connection is tightened. If the bolt then loosens during the test, the stroke continues to change. In the field, it is ultimately the forced transverse stroke that leads to the loosening of bolt connections. To enable a more differentiated test setup, the new TesT 208.200kN allows control of the transverse stroke in a closed loop as required, during the running test. The transverse displacement amplitude can be kept constant, and any desired ramps or other sequences can be simulated. This product innovation anticipates the new aviation standard ISO 16130, which describes amplitude regulation during the execution of experiments as preferred. Custom engineering for OEMs looking to onshore manufacturing
Optimas Solutions, an industrial manu- facturer/distributor and service provider, has enhanced its standing in the fastener supply chain by changing the way manufacturers improve product design, streamline production and increase efficiency with new onshore custom and collaborative design engineering capabilities in the USA. It claims to be the only fastener company in the USA and the UK that offers advanced cold forming manufacturing and global supply chain distribution offerings. In 2020, it announced a strategy to emphasise its manufacturing services. Advancements within its engineering solutions (3D printing with plastic, carbon and steel, rapid prototyping, design software and cold forming equipment)
have allowed it to better leverage its manufacturing capacity for supply chain, operations and procurement professionals who are responsible for fastener acquisition and usage. In-house application and manufacturing engineers enable Optimas to be a one- stop shop for customers to design and produce fasteners. Cold form engineered services offer custom large-scale product production for flexibility in fastener manufacturing, in diameters from M2 to M22. The company has 106 dedicated machines – 43 cold headers and 42 thread rollers, plus shavers, trimmers, and pointing, slotting and drilling equipment. Optimas has strategic local partners for heat treating, plating, coating, patching and other secondary processes, as well as partnerships with 11 licensed brands known for thread-forming and drive solutions that also include weight- and height-saving solutions.
