This issue we have a feature on fittings, flanges, valves & connectors and we take a look at the trade shows Stainless Steel World 2015 in Maastricht and Tolexpo 2015, which takes place in Paris. We also have an extended article taking an in-depth look at orbital welding solutions with a particular focus on offshore umbilicals, which starts on page 56. I have just returned from Tube South East Asia 2015, which was a very well organised show. We received a warm welcome and a lot of nice feedback about the magazine and met a lot of new contacts, which was great as it was my first visit to Thailand. There is clearly huge potential in the market there with so many towns and cities modernising their infrastructure and it will be interesting to see how it grows over the next few years. Next issue the editorial deadline is 23 October and we will begin our extensive Tube Düsseldorf show coverage. We are a media partner for the event and the January issue will feature a show preview so please do get your editorial in to give visitors a sneak preview of any new products that you will be exhibiting and where to find you. In the January issue we also have features on steel tubes, construction & structural tubes and pipe rehabilitation & repair so please send your press releases to rory@intras.co.uk. Both the

New super-duplex from Ugitech meets NORSOK standards

Consequently, all components in pipelines, flanges, valves and filter systems must be very high quality to ensure their safe long-term use and to prevent environmental pollution. “UGI 4410 steel is an excellent compromise between good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance,” emphasised Marc Marticou, business development manager at Ugitech. “The nickel content of this super-duplex stainless steel is low compared to the one of super-austenitic stainless steel. This is what makes this super-duplex steel comparatively competitive.” As a producer of special steel, Ugitech has longstanding competence in the production of precise profile wire for filter systems for the oil and gas industry as well as petrochemical applications. This is also documented for bar products by the NORSOK certificate M-650 material qualification, which UGI 4410 stainless steel received at the end of 2014. This certification documents that existing oil industry specification and qualification requirements are fully met. The requirements for certification are high quality and safe processes in stainless steel production, the chemical composition of the material, and various material tests such as tensile tests,

In oil and gas production, the materials handling and production technology constantly comes into contact with aggressive fluids: an acidic PH value and varying gas pressure stress connecting components and filters. In hot salt water, aggressive chlorides attack the material. To provide the offshore upstream industry with a permanent, process- safe, environmentally friendly material solution, Ugitech, part of the Schmolz + Bickenbach Group, has expanded its product portfolio to include the UGI ® 4410 super-duplex stainless steel. Super-duplex meets the requirements for corrosion resistance and good pressure resistance. This Ugitech special steel also meets the NORSOK standards of the Norwegian mineral oil industry. This new material from the producer of special long steel products is a certified solution for meeting the rise in demand for greater corrosion resistance that conventional austenitic and martensitic steel grades cannot provide. The deep sea has an increasingly hydrogen sulphide and acidic hydrocarbon content that directly attacks the steel used in this environment. The material is also subjected to high-pressure loads.

toughness tests and corrosion tests. UGI 4462 duplex steel and UGI 4507 super-duplex have also received the NORSOK certificate. The outer pipe of this filter system consists of corrosion-resistant profile wire made of the UGI 4410 material and withstands the high pressure and aggressive media used in oil and gas production Photo credit: Ugitech

be used for components in chemical processing, pulp and paper, refineries and marine applications, as well as in desalination plants. Independent verification and approval of the manufacture and consistent quality of the new super-duplex bar, in accordance with the NORSOK standard, was carried out by Aker Solutions of Norway. A member company of the NORSOK committee, Aker Solutions is a global provider of products, systems and services to the oil and gas industry. Sandvik employs rigorous quality controls throughout the production process to ensure the consistency of the material. “Gaining the new NORSOK approvals for our duplex and super-duplex grades means that our customers can be assured that the material consistency and quality is the same every time,” said Marcus Hillbom, Sandvik technical marketing specialist. “This not only saves them time in terms of machine setup and component manufacture, but also in consistent and dependable performance characteristics of the finished product in some of the most demanding and aggressive applications in the world.” sandvik Materials Technology – Sweden www.smt.sandvik.com

We know this makes a difference to our customers, who can depend on the consistent material characteristics of the bar without fail.” NORSOK approval has also been achieved for a new super-duplex grade, Sandvik SAF 32760, which offers excellent corrosion resistance and high mechanical strength. Its use facilitates the manufacture of lighter components and more compact system designs with less welding. The material grade provides advantages in component manufacture, particularly for oil and gas and subsea applications. Similarly, it can

Updated C906-15 AWWA standard published The American Water Works Association (AWWA) has published an updated version of its C906 standard, with significant revisions and changes to all of its sections.

“PE4710 HDPE pipes provide zero-leakage, conserving water and preventing raw sewage from entering into waterways or watersheds, and they are ideal for both trenchless and trenched installations. Standards around the world recognise the full benefits of HDPE pipe, and the AWWA and ANSI approved standard now does too.”

The C906-15 update includes enhanced performance high-density polyethylene (HDPE) resins – PE4710 – that improve the durability and reliability of HDPE pressure pipe used in municipal and industrial water and wastewater systems. “This is truly a significant event, pro- viding great benefits to municipalities, businesses and citizens,” commented Tony Radoszewski, president of the Plastics Pipe Institute (PPI). “The demands for installation of new pipelines, and revitalisation of the deteriorating water pipe infrastructure are urgent and critical. “Federal and industry sources estimate that approximately 2.5bn gallons of drinking water are lost every day because of dilapidated pipes.
