SMS group to supply production facility for large-diameter pipes

Besides the engineering and project planning, scheduling and coordination, SMS group will supply all key machinery as well as the process equipment. This also includes workshops, laboratories and manufacturing execution system equipment. The production line will consist of an edge miller, a crimping press, a JCO ® pipe forming press, tack welder, inside and outside welder, mechanical expander and a hydrostatic pipe tester. The JCOE ® pipe forming process developed by SMS offers a whole range of advantages as the plant operator can change over to other pipe dimensions quickly, allowing the production of even smaller batch sizes economically with the utmost precision. All presses are equipped with variable speed pumps (VSP) providing for an efficient hydraulic system with pressures up to 450 bar, which reduces energy consumption by 30 per cent compared with conventional hydraulic systems. The Shape automation system developed by SMS performs the fully automatic control of the forming process. It improves the

performance as well as compensates the influences of plate inhomogeneity in the forming process. Thus a consistently high pipe quality can be guaranteed. Al Gharbia Pipe Company will manufacture high-grade large-diameter longitudinal welded steel pipes mainly for the energy sector, and is targeting markets in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. With the development and production of oil and gas forecast to be robust in these countries, the demand for high- quality steel pipelines to transport these resources is expected to grow. Al Gharbia Pipe Company is a joint venture of investment company Senaat, JFE Steel and Marubeni-Itochu Steel (MISI). The new company is leveraging JFE Steel’s technology for high-quality large-diameter longitudinal welded steel pipes, MISI’s sales capabilities and Senaat’s industrial footprint in Abu Dhabi.

AL GHARBIA Pipe Company has awarded the consortium of Larsen & Toubro Limited and SMS Group with a contract as engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the supply of a turn-key longitudinal submerged arc welded pipe production facility. SMS group will be responsible for the engineering and supply of process equipment for the large-diameter pipe production facility to be built in Abu Dhabi. Larsen & Toubro Limited – SMS’s partner in the consortium – will be responsible for the civil works and erection of the equipment. The new LSAW large-pipe production facility, which will be located within the Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi, will start producing in 2018. Material grades up to X80 will be processed at a production capacity of 240,000 tons per year. The pipes will be suitable for use as offshore line pipes and onshore applications. The new line will be designed to make pipes up to 12.2m long with an outside diameter ranging from 18 to 56". The maximum wall thickness will be 44.5mm. Present during the contract signing ceremony were (from left to right): Pinaki Chakraborty, Amit Swarnkar, Derek Michael Shah (all Larsen & Toubro Limited), Tadayuki Baba (Marubeni-Itochu Steel), Tariq Al Wahedi, Jamal Salem Al Dhaheri (both Senaat), Marcel Fasswald and Frank Lüth (both SMS group)

25 years of Aicon 3D OPTICAL, camera-based 3D metrology has become a standard in many industrial areas and more than 4,000 of the installed 3D measuring systems worldwide come from Aicon 3D Systems. For 25 years the company has developed, manufactured and supplied 3D metrology for various applications. Aicon is one of the leading global full- range suppliers. “In the first place, we wanted to name our company ICON. That sounded fitting, as the word means ‘image’ in Greek. Because of trademark issues, it wasn’t possible; an image processing company already carried that name. However, we liked the sound of the word. We simply put an A in front: Aicon. The sound is the same, and it has an advantage: we are always on top in alphabetic company lists.” This is how Dr-Ing Carl-Thomas Schneider and Dr- Ing Werner Bösemann summarise the start of the company. In 1990 they jointly founded Aicon 3D Systems GmbH, initially a spin-off from Volkswagen Research and Technical University Braunschweig. The business incubator “Technologiepark Braunschweig” provided ideal conditions – Aicon was growing fast. In 2003, the company moved to its own buildings in the Northwest of Braunschweig. In order to meet the increasing company requirements in metrology, Aicon took over the scanner manufacturer Breuckmann in 2012. The joint product portfolio includes innovative solutions for universal applications: portable coordinate measuring machines for universal applications, specialised optical measuring technology for vehicle testing and tube manufacturing, as well as white light scanners for contact- free surface measurement of objects. Aicon’s list of customers includes renowned automotive manufacturers, companies from aerospace industry and mechanical engineering as well as research facilities and universities. Dr Frank brings his expertise for new markets to the lead position of the executive board. For the new CEO the objectives of the company are clear. “Our main focus is on finding solutions for our customers to optimise the production processes and the end product itself with innovations and the possibility of reducing costs at the same time,” said Dr Frank. “We want to continue to expand and, therefore, we want to use the vast technical potential of Sikora in order to develop new products for new markets but without losing sight of inherent markets.”

A CHANGE in the leadership of Sikora AG has resulted in Dr Christian Frank,

who has been a member of the board since 2013, taking over the position of chief executive officer. Dr Frank replaces Harry Prunk as chairman. However, Mr Prunk, who has successfully fulfilled the role of CEO since 2011, will continue as an important member of the board. In the course of reorganisation Dr Frank is now responsible for human resources, controlling, research and development, business development/ strategy and operations. TUBING in the small diameter range below 1" OD is commonly used in specialist applications in the medical, aerospace, automotive and precision equipment sectors. These applications can demand tubing with the highest standards in terms of mechanical and surface quality. Plasmait has completed the building of an annealing and surface treatment line for a producer of precision tubing, which involved a custom-built coiler type payoff and take-up, and covered an OD range from 0.5 to over 8mm. The annealing and surface treatment line will be used primarily for various stainless steel and nickel alloy tubing, but will also be capable of producing other materials with a wide annealing temperature range from 300°C to 1,200°C. An example of this is its ability to manufacture ‘special plastics’ blades with a side-grind tooth design for the creation of an aesthetically pleasing ‘diamond- polished’ finish when cutting acrylics. “Accuracy, longevity and repeatability are essential to all our customers, regardless of whether they are manufacturing fine furniture or are cutting cardboard, ferrous or non-ferrous metals, laminates or composites,” added Mr Parkes. “By investing in the latest four-, five- and six-axis high precision CNC sawblade production technologies from leading manufacturers including Loroch GmbH, Vollmer and Walter, we offer our customers the most comprehensive one-stop solution for manufacturing and re-manufacturing TCT and SHSS sawblades, as well as PCD tooling.” The CNC sawblade re-manufacturing and tooling technologies offered by Dynashape include precision tungsten carbide tipped (TCT) sawblade on the website with their name subject to a public vote. Companies are able to nominate themselves, and all nominees awarded 20 votes or more will be invited to confirm their application. Arrangements will then be made for members of the Welding World Awards panel of judges to visit the companies in January and February 2016, should they reach the shortlist within the top ten. Categories include best gas supplier, best new welding product, best safety product supplier, best welding distributor, best welding industry training provider, best welding product supplier,

DYNASHAPE, a UK sawblade servicing and manufacturing specialist, has invested around £500,000 in the latest robotic CNC sawblade production technologies. The significant outlay adds five new CNC machines to Dynashape’s capabilities and further enhances the levels of service that the business is able to offer to its growing customer base. The new machinery will be located in the company’s new £300,000 Servicing Centre of Excellence in Stourbridge, UK. “With more than 50 years of expertise behind us, Dynashape is already recognised across the UK for its uncompromising sawblade servicing and refurbishing capabilities,” commented operations director Chris Parkes. “This is because rather than ‘sharpen’ blunt blades, our approach is to ‘re-manufacture’ them using advanced CNC machinery – the same machinery as is used by leading sawblade manufacturers globally. As a result, our customers benefit from blades that, time after time, can be re- manufactured to perform as precisely and as efficiently as they did when new – and all for significantly less than the cost of purchasing new blades.” As well as providing sawblades that meet ‘as new’ tolerances, the company’s use of advanced CNC machining THE Association of Welding Distribution has announced the new Welding World Awards, which aim to find and recognise the best examples of work across all aspects of the welding industry. The awards ceremony will be held on Wednesday 13 April 2016 at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole, UK, during MACH, a showcase for the manufacturing and engineering industries. The awards are international, impartial and independent, and can be won by anyone involved in the industry. To enter, a company must be nominated online at www.welding-world.com.
